Mission
THE MISSION OF SAFESPOT CHILDREN'S ADVOCACY CENTER IS TO PROVIDE A SAFE ENVIRONMENT AND SUPPORT SERVICES FOR CHILD ABUSE VICTIMS AND THEIR FAMILIES AS THEY NAVIGATE THE INVESTIGATION AND AFTERMATH OF ABUSE.
Program accomplishments
- MENTAL HEALTH THERAPY: CHILDREN RECOVERING FROM PHYSICAL AND SEXUAL ABUSE RECEIVE THERAPEUTIC TREATMENT TO FOSTER LASTING HEALING. SAFESPOT THERAPISTS COMBINE EVIDENCE-BASED TREATMENTS, INCLUDING TRAUMAFOCUSED COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (TFCBT), CHILD AND FAMILY TRAUMATIC STRESS INTERVENTION (CFTSI), AND EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITIZATION AND REPROCESSING (EMDR), WITH EXPRESSIVE APPROACHES SUCH AS ART AND PLAY THERAPY TO DEVELOP INDIVIDUALIZED TREATMENT PLANS THAT BEST MEET EACH CHILD'S NEEDS. OVER AN AVERAGE OF 24-36 SESSIONS, THERAPISTS HELP CHILDREN BUILD COPING STRATEGIES, REDUCE SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY, ADDRESS NEGATIVE BEHAVIORS AND THINKING PATTERNS, AND REGAIN THE ABILITY TO FORM TRUSTING, HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS.Expenses $715,596
- FAMILY ADVOCACY: FOR PARENTS AND NONOFFENDING CAREGIVERS, SUPPORT AND EDUCATION ARE CRITICAL TO THEIR ABILITY TO HELP THEIR CHILDREN RECOVER. ADVOCATES PROVIDE CRISIS COUNSELING AND CASE MANAGEMENT, RESOURCES AND COMMUNITY REFERRALS, AND GUIDANCE ABOUT THE IMPACTS OF TRAUMA AND HOW THEY CAN BEST SUPPORT THEIR CHILDREN AND FAMILY.Expenses $510,296
- FORENSIC INTERVIEWING: WHEN POLICE OR CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES RECEIVE A REPORT THAT A CHILD HAS BEEN PHYSICALLY OR SEXUALLY ABUSED, OR HAS WITNESSED A VIOLENT CRIME, THE CHILD IS BROUGHT TO SAFESPOT FOR A FORENSIC INTERVIEW THAT IS MADE AVAILABLE TO ALL AGENCIES INVOLVED IN INVESTIGATING AND PROSECUTING THE ABUSE. THE GOAL OF THE FORENSIC INTERVIEW IS TO GATHER INFORMATION THAT EVALUATES THE CHILD'S SAFETY, ASSESSES THE NEED FOR MEDICAL OR PSYCHOLOGICAL CARE, CORROBORATES OR REFUTES ALLEGATIONS OF ABUSE, AND IDENTIFIES THE INVOLVEMENT OF - OR RISK TO - OTHER CHILDREN. THESE CAREFULLY COORDINATED INTERVIEWS ELIMINATE THE NEED FOR CHILDREN TO BE REPEATEDLY QUESTIONED ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES, WHICH CAN ADD TO THE TRAUMA OF THEIR ABUSE.Expenses $386,457
