Mission
TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF VETERANS AND SOCIETY BY ADVANCING THE RESEARCH AND EDUCATION MISSION OF THE CINCINNATI VA MEDICAL CENTER.
Program accomplishments
- CAPS-5 - DR. KATHLEEN CHARDINITIATED IN 2018 AND CLOSED IN 2026 WITH SEVERAL FOLLOW UP STUDIES. THE STUDY WAS HELD AT 3 LOCATIONS: CINCINNATI, WALTER REED, AND TRIPLER ARMY MEDICAL CENTER. THE CAPS-5 (CLINICIAN-ADMINISTERED PTSD SCALE FOR DSM-5) IS THE PRIMARY CLINICAL STRUCTURED INTERVIEW USED TO DIAGNOSE AND ASSESS THE SEVERITY OF POST-TRAMATIC STRESS DISORDER (PTSD) AT MENTAL HEALTH FACILITIES, INCLUDING THE CINCINNATI VA MEDICAL CENTER. THE CAPS-5 IS FREQUENTLY USED ACROSS CINCINNATI VA LOCATIONS TO SUPPORT VETERANS IN SEVERAL KEY WAYS SUCH AS DIAGNOSIS AND MEASUREMENT AS WELL AS TRAUMA EVALUATION. IT MEASURES THE FREQUENCY AND INTENSITY OF ALL 20 DSM-5 PTSD SYMPTOMS TO FORMULATE DIAGNOSES AND EVALUATE TREATMENT OUTCOMES. IT HELPS CLINICIANS DETERMINE THE "CRITERION A" TRAUMATIC EVENTS CAUSING THE MOST DISTRESS AND AFFECTING DAY-TO-DAY OCCUPATIONAL AND SOCIAL FUNCTIONING.Expenses $203,312
- PREVENTABLE - DR. JACK RUBINSTEININITIATED IN 2023 AND IS STILL ACTIVE TODAY AND RECRUITING WELL ACROSS THE COUNTRY. THIS IS A SUBAWARD FROM DUKE UNIVERSITY. PREVENTABLE IS ONE OF THE LARGEST CLINICAL RESEARCH STUDIES IN ADULTS 75 YEARS OR OLDER. THE GOAL OF THE STUDY IS TO LEARN IF TAKING A STATIN COULD HELP OLDER ADULTS LIVE WELL FOR LONGER BY PREVENTING DEMENTIA, DISABILITY, OR HEART DISEASE. A STATIN IS A MEDICATION COMMONLY USED TO LOWER CHOLESTEROL. PREVENTABLE IS A PRAGMATIC STUDY. PRAGMATIC STUDIES MAKE PARTICIPATING IN RESEARCH EASY BY USING NEW METHODS TO CONNECT RESEARCHERS WITH PARTICIPANTS WHERE THEY LIVE AND ON THEIR SCHEDULE. PRAGMATIC STUDIES ALSO TEST IF A DRUG HAS THE EXPECTED EFFECTS RATHER THAN HOW IT WORKS. PRAGMATIC STUDIES LIKE PREVENTABLE ARE IDEAL FOR OLDER ADULTS. WE FOLLOW STUDY PARTICIPANTS BY REVIEWING THEIR HEALTH RECORDS AND THROUGH A PHONE CALL. WE ALSO MAIL STUDY DRUG DIRECTLY TO PARTICIPANT'S HOMES.Expenses $40,244
- GENETIC LINKAGE IN LUPUS - DR. JOHN HARLEYINITIATED IN 2022 AS A SUBAWARD WITH CHILDREN'S MEDICAL CENTER, CINCINNATI. THE OVERALL GOAL IN AI024717 IS TO DEVELOP MODELS OF SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS (SLE) ETIOLOGY AND PATHOGENESIS THAT THEN CONSTITUTE A CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK TO IMPROVE MANAGEMENT, THERAPY, AND PREVENTION. IN ADDITION TO OUR WORK IN LUPUS GENETICS AND IMMUNOCHEMISTRY, TWO MAJOR ADVANCES HAVE OCCURRED IN THE PAST TWO YEARS THAT TRANSFORM OUR ABILITY TO DEVELOP MODELS OF DISEASE ORIGIN AND PATHOGENESIS. THEY ARE THE DISCOVERY OF ZEB2 AS A MASTER REGULATOR OF THE B CELL TYPE THAT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PRODUCTION OF THE PATHOGENIC AUTOANTIBODIES (DAI ET AL. SCIENCE 383:413. PMID: 38271512). THE OTHER IS THE RECOVERY AND CHARACTERIZATION OF EPSTEIN-BARR VIRUS (EBV) INFECTED B CELLS FROM SLE PATIENTS (YOUNIS, ET AL. SCI TRANSL MED. 17(824):EADY0210. PMID: 41223250), A STUDY TO WHICH THIS NIH GRANT CONTRIBUTED. IN COMBINATION WITH OUR EARLIER WORK, THESE ADVANCES HAVE ENABLED US TO FORMULATE HEURISTIC MODEL OF SLE ORIGIN FROM EBV INFECTION TO AUTOANTIBODY PRODUCTION, WHICH WE PLAN TO PRESENT TO THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF RHEUMATOLOGY IN THE FALL OF 2026.Expenses $73,945
