Mission

Elevate Childhood Cancer Research and Advocacy advances its charitable mission through three core pillars: advocacy, empowerment, and strategic investment in research. Advocacy focuses on elevating the voices of patients and caregivers within multi-stakeholder healthcare and research environments, ensuring that lived experience is represented in discussions related to diagnostics, therapeutics, care protocols, and survivorship. Empowerment is defined as equipping families with timely, accurate, and accessible information related to their child or loved one's diagnosis, with a particular focus on rhabdomyosarcoma and pediatric renal cancers, such as Wilms tumor. Strategic Investment supports collaborative scientific efforts to improve understanding of childhood cancers and advance the development of more effective diagnostics and therapeutic approaches.

Program accomplishments

  • Strategic Investment Program Accomplishments. Elevate Childhood Cancer Research and Advocacy advances its charitable mission through strategic investments in collaborative and translational research aimed at improving outcomes for children and young people with cancer. These investments focus on addressing critical gaps in research infrastructure, data access, and early-stage scientific development, with an emphasis on rare and. high-risk pediatric cancers, including rhabdomyosarcoma and pediatric renal cancers, such as Wilms. Elevate supported research conducted at Indiana Biosciences Research Institute (IBRI) focused on advancing understanding of pediatric sarcomas, particularly the mechanisms driving metastatic disease. This investment supports translational research infrastructure that enables the development of patient-derived cellular models. During the reporitng period, research efforts included investigation of key signaling pathways involved in metastasis, including PDGFR activity, and the development of monoclonal antibody approaches designed to disrupt these pathways. This work addresses a critical unmet need, as most current therapies target primary tumors rather than metastatic disease, which is responsible for the majority of cancer-related mortality. Elevate's investment is intended to support the advancement of research, contributing to the development of more effective therapeutic strategies for children and young people affected by pediatric sarcomas. In addition, Elevate collaboratively funded the Rhabdo Coalition Statistician in Residence to support research efforts within the Children's Oncology Group (COG) Soft Tissue Sarcoma Committee at the end of the reporting period. This investment is intended to address a critical infrastructure gap by improving access to high-quality, harmonized data for researchers and strengthening the analytical capacity needed to support collaborative pediatric cancer research. This role provides dedicated statistical expertise to support data analysis, study development, and interpretation of findings across multiple rhabdomyosarcoma research initiatives. Planned activities include support for ongoing and future research projects, facilitation of data harmonization across institutions, and contribution of US clinical trial data to the international INSTRuCT database to enable broader global collaboration. This investment is expected to accelerate statistical analyses and manuscript development and to support emerging research in areas such as risk stratification, treatment tailoring, toxicity management, and identification of potential biomarkers, including circulating tumor DNA. These efforts are intended to strengthen data-driven clinical trial design and support the development of more precise and effective therapeutic strategies for children and young people with rhabdomyosarcoma. Elevate's continued support is intended to sustain and expand this capacity, enabling ongoing analysis and translation of research findings into future clinical applications. Population Served: Elevate's strategic research investments serve children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer, particularly those affected by rare and high-risk diseases such as rhabdomyosarcoma and pediatric renal cancers, as well as their families and caregivers. The program also serves clinicians, researchers, and collaborative stakeholders engaged in pediatric oncology. Beneficiaries are indirect and not precisely quantifiable, as investments support research infrastructure, data accessibility, and early-stage and translational efforts intended to inform future clinical applications and improve outcomes for current and future patients. Based on disease incidence, rhabdomyosarcoma affects approximately 400 young people in the US each year.
    grants $30,000
  • Empowerment Program Accomplishments: Elevate Childhood Cancer Research and Advocacy's empowerment program focuses on equipping patients, families, and caregivers with timely, accurate, and accessible information related to childhood cancer diagnoses, with a particular focus on pediatric sarcomas and renal tumors, including rhabdomyosarcoma and Wilms tumor. These efforts are designed to improve understanding of complex medical information, support informed decision-making, and reduce barriers to accessing high-quality, disease-specific knowledge across the care continuum. During the reporting period, Elevate, in collaboration with members of the Rhabdo Coalition, developed and hosted the State of Sarcoma event at CureFest in Washington, DC. This program convened approximately 80 participants, including patients, families, nonprofit representatives, and others affected by pediatric sarcomas. The event featured presentations from four clinicians and researchers representing high-volume centers of care across the United States, who shared updates on current research, treatment approaches, and emerging areas of study. The program also included dedicated time for questions and answers, as well as structured opportunities for peer connection and information exchange among families. Elevate also developed an advocate-led educational webinar focused on genetic testing and screening for children affected by pediatric renal cancers. The webinar featured participation from a leading clinical expert and was designed to provide families with accessible, evidence-informed information to better understand genetic risk, testing considerations, and implications for care. To extend its reach, the webinar has been made publicly available through Elevate's digital and social media platforms. In addition, Elevate maintains and disseminates disease-specific educational content and resources through its website, providing families with ongoing access to curated information related to diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship. Through these activities, Elevate advances its empowerment mission by increasing access to high-quality information, supporting informed engagement in care and decision-making, and strengthening connections among families and the broader childhood cancer community. Population Served: Elevate's empowerment program serves children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer, particularly those affected by pediatric sarcomas and renal tumors, as well as their families and caregivers. Beneficiaries include individuals seeking disease-specific information at various stages of the care continuum, from diagnosis through treatment and survivorship. Additional beneficiaries include advocates and community members seeking to better understand childhood cancer and support affected families.
    Expenses $5,173
  • Advocacy Program Accomplishments. Elevate Childhood Cancer Research and Advocacy's Advocacy Program focuses on elevating the voices of patients and caregivers within multi-stakeholder healthcare and research environments. The program ensures that lived experience is integrated into discussions and planning related to diagnostics, therapeutics, clinical trials, care protocols, and survivorship across childhood cancers, including rhabdomyosarcoma, Wilms tumor, and other pediatric renal cancers. This work is intended to accelerate the development of more effective therapies, improve diagnostic approaches, and strengthen treatment and survivorship protocols for children and young people with cancer by enhancing collaboration, reducing barriers to coordination, and improving alignment across research, clinical, development and policy settings. Elevated participated in and hosted multiple multi-stakeholder programs designed to ensure meaningful inclusion of patient and caregiver perspectives in decision-making processes. These programs brought together patients and families, clinicians, scientists, industry representatives, and policy stakeholders to support shared learning, strengthen connections, and promote more coordinated approaches to childhood cancer challenges. The most significant was the 2nd Annual Indiana Pediatric Sarcoma Summit, which brought together approximately 70 participants from dozens of institutions. Developed using Elevate's multi-stakeholder model, the Summit is part of a broader initiative to strengthen collaboration among Indiana-based stakeholders and improve coordination in pediatric sarcoma care and research, and potentially, serve as a pilot for other diseases. The event created structured opportunities for cross-sector dialogue, patient and caregiver engagement, and identification of priorities for future collaboration. Elevate also participated in the ACCELERATE Strategy Forum on antibody drug conjugates, collaborating across stakeholders to advocate for pediatric inclusion in clinical trials. In addition, Elevate collaborated with the Kidney Cancer Association and Joey's Wings to host the first Pediatric Renal Tumor Roundtable, convening 30 individuals (clinicians, scientists, advocates) representing the spectrum of pediatric renal cancers. This effort advanced the development of consensus statements identifying key priority areas for advocacy, collaboration, and community focus over the next one to three years. Through these activities, Elevate advances its advocacy mission by ensuring that patient and caregiver perspectives are consistently incorporated into multi-stakeholder discussions that influence childhood cancer research, clinical trial design, and care delivery. Population Served. Elevate's advocacy program serves children and young people affected by cancer, particularly those diagnosed with pediatric sarcomas, such as rhabdomyosarcoma, and pediatric renal cancers, such as Wilms tumor, and their families and caregivers. The program also serves clinicians, researchers, industry partners, and policy stakeholders engaged in childhood cancer care and research. Beneficiaries are indirect and not precisely quantifiable, as activities focus on systems-level collaboration, inclusion of lived experience and improving decision0-making processes that impact current and future patients.
