Mission

The primary purpose of New Directions is to provide college transfer courses to AICs at Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution (EOCI) with the hopes that the students will eventually receive an associate degree (AA) from Treasure Valley Community College who provides credit for the courses. It is also hoped that students will further their degree after receiving the AA and become contributing members to society. Studies have shown that education has shown to reduce recidivism among AICs.

Program accomplishments

  • NDEP offered a total of twelve classes in summer 2025, fall 2025, winter 2026 and spring 2026 with a total of 76 students. These classes were Animal science Philosophical Problems, Writing Composition I, US History, Freshman Orientation, Intermediate Algebra I, Geology, Survey of American Literature, Precalculus I Functions, Environmental Science, Writing Composition II and Social Change and Institutions. Some were offered on line instruction, some had an in person instructor and some were a hybrid. All students were successful in the courses they had taken. We have three students who will graduate with an AA degree at the end of summer term. This is quite an accomplishment taking one courses a quarter. Several other students have nearly completed their AA degree requirements, requiring just two or three courses. One of the difficulties is finding qualified instructors who have the time and are willing to teach in the prison environment. Treasure Valley Community College has been very good to work with and have been finding instructors and courses that students need for graduation.
