Mission
ICHA organizes the annual Tiny Feet, Big Steps - Advancing Care of Critically Ill and Premature Babies in Africa conference
Program accomplishments
- In support of our mission to provide evidence-based, compassionate medical care to children through education, research and collaboration with hospitals throughout Africa in 2024 we accomplished: The 4th annual Tiny Feet, Big Steps Conference in Arusha, Tanzania. This conference hosted 210 nurses and doctors representing 22 African and non-African countries with 90 unique lectures and skills workshops over 6 days. In addition, the conference included a global team of instructors of 50 physicians, NICU nurses and allied health professionals from 40 academic institutions across 14 countries. This conference is internationally recognized as a platform for NICU teams to exchange innovations, quality improvement initiatives and network with others across the globe. In addition, our programs funded and supported Dr. Stephen Swanson and his NICU team at Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre ALMC. This team provides an innovative approach to Neonatology in East Africa focusing on education and training that is appropriate to the setting resulting in NICU survival rates rarely seen in East Africa. Dr. Swanson continued to deliver care to critically ill and preterm neonates at this hospital without the use of expensive, advanced - skill technologies like mechanical ventilators. Last, in partnership with the medical device company ONY Biotech, ICHA has been able to provide essential medical supplies such as CPAPs and surfactant to hospitals in East Africa.Expenses $166,369
