Mission
Kentuckiana Homeschool, Inc (KHS) is an inclusive, secular support system for homeschooling families across Kentuckiana. Through academic enrichment options, group field trips, and a welcoming community, KHS creates the foundation families need to build a strong path towards their children's academic futures. KHS pursues this exempt purpose via five areas of focus. 1. Membership Support: Services such as weekly meetups, a robust online forum, and members' only activities. 2. Wildflowers Academy: A once weekly drop-off program where students spend a full day in a classroom of their peers. 3. Explorations Academy: A once weekly drop-off program offering elective academic sessions in areas such as geography, US history, musical theater, and band. 4. KHS High School Foundations: Academic enrichment and community service options for high school aged students. 5. River City Field Trips: Organizes and facilitates educational field trips at low-cost group rates.
Program accomplishments
- Between July 1, 2024, and May 31, 2025 (FY2024-2025), Kentuckiana Homeschool (KHS) carried out its exempt purposes through extensive membership support and services. KHS served over 100 member families during FY2024-2025. With an average of four family members per member family, that equals at least 400 individuals served. During FY2024-2025 KHS was able to upgrade the classrooms rented for academic programming and purchase quality science supplies for student use. KHS also implemented enhanced record-keeping and organizational systems. At least 20 new families registered for KHS academic programs, in addition to the 65+ families returning from previous years. This provided financial stability so that KHS was able to plan for an expansion of services. KHS supplied printed membership cards to each family, organized members' only events, and negotiated low-cost opportunities for members to attend local Broadway events. KHS also maintained an active social media group where members could ask and receive guidance on various homeschooling issues. In this social media group, administrators shared timely reminders and annual guidelines to help member families legally register their children as homeschooled students in their respective states, shared any breaking news that affected homeschooling families at the local and national level, and posted useful curriculum sources and event listings. Through a bi-monthly newsletter, KHS kept member families updated on services and benefits available to them as members. KHS organized a weekly in-person social gathering at a local park and offered several low-cost field trip options specifically for its membership. A Not-Back-To-School Party and Spring Field Day were both offered to member families.Expenses $7,156
- II. Wildflowers Academy: Wildflowers Academy, KHS's once-weekly cottage program, enrolled 66 students ranging in grades from kindergarten to 8th grade, representing 39 member families during FY2024-2025. Wildflowers Academy was held from 10am until 2:30pm most Tuesdays from September 2024 to April 2025. As one of the only secular programs of this type in the Kentuckiana area, Wildflowers Academy served the important purpose of providing a secular enrichment option for homeschooling families seeking this kind of instruction for their students. Wildflowers Academy classrooms provided 28 days of general education enrichments, including arts & crafts, creative writing, geography, earth science, world history, phonics, and elementary math. Students participated in many group projects, building collaborative and cooperative social skills, learning to respect peer boundaries, and developing responsive language functionality.Expenses $74,394
- III. River City Field Trips (RCFT): Through RCFT, KHS offered 40+ cost-effective field trips to homeschooling families across Kentuckiana. It is important to note that RCFT is open to all homeschooling families, not only member families of KHS. Overall, RCFT served 2200 individuals during FY2024-2025. Field trip destinations included theater productions at the Derby Dinner Playhouse, a rescue horse farm administered by the Kentucky Humane Society, historical sites such as the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and the Conrad-Caldwell House, and state parks such as the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace NHP (KY) and the Franklin Park Conservatory (OH). Not only did this program fulfill KHS's exempt purposes by providing affordable access to educational opportunities throughout the community, but participation fees generated over $8000.00 in support for other nonprofit organizations and helped build bridges between quality charitable groups.Expenses $29,244
- IV. Explorations Academy/Next Steps High School Program: Explorations Academy and Next Steps are future programs for KHS. Explorations Academy launched in FY2024-2025. Next Steps should launch in FY2025-2026. These programs will consist of once-weekly meetings and will further the exempt purposes of KHS by providing new secular academic opportunities for homeschooling families. During FY2023-2024, the KHS Board of Directors, employed administrative and teaching staff, and volunteers from KHS member families developed the business structure and created a content framework for Explorations Academy. By surveying member families and the larger homeschooling community, KHS identified academic sessions that would serve the stated needs of homeschooling families and sought and hired qualified teachers for these sessions. Curriculum development was underway by Spring 2024 and early enrollment began. By the end of FY2023-2024, Explorations Academy had pre-registered 40 students representing 25 member families into the program that would begin in September 2024.Expenses $56,304
