Mission

Community-based recreation programs for teens and adults with disabilities to promote enjoyment and enrichment, personal growth, greater independence and community involvement, and life-long learning.

990 for the year ended December 31, 2025

Program accomplishments

  • Group Programs provide 6 days a week of group recreation programs for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Diverse Program activities include yoga, dance classes, art classes, kayaking, fitness lessons, gardening, and more. Group programs aim to support members in building their health and happiness, increasing access to community activities, and decreasing isolation through friendship. Group Programs also support families through respite care, allowing family caregivers to rest while their loved one is in a safe and enriching environment. This critical service results in stability, resiliency, and overall well-being for 145 individuals with IDD, totaling more than 38,000 hours of care.
    Expenses $816,479 · grants $162,546 · revenue $658,543
  • One-on-One Services are individualized, goal-based services assisting members in accessing services and resources and experiencing activities out of the home and in the community that are tailored and unique to the individuals' goals. These include learning how to read, attending a spin class at the gym, volunteering at a local non-profit, joining a local club or league, etc. This meaningful service results in growth, resiliency, and overall well-being for 65 individuals with IDD, totaling 4,835 hours of care.
    Expenses $137,678 · grants $34,902 · revenue $83,917
  • The seasonal Higbee Hikers Program meets every Saturday and runs 8 months out of the year to support participants in outdoor recreation and to increase access to local trails and paths. This program works to remove barriers and promotes inclusivity in the outdoor community. Staff are trained to plan accessible routes, offer mobility assistance to participants, create route modifications as needed, and provide individual support and encouragement to participants. Like all of MHC's programs, the Higbee Hikers Program incorporates education, life-long learning, and transferable skills. The program teaches participants how to use the bus to access local trails so that they may access those trails independently or with other caregivers outside of the program. Public transportation is a valuable skill that benefits participants in their social, recreational, school, and work lives as well. The program offers educational experiences through topics like plant identification, outdoor skills, and trail etiquette. In 2024, Higbee Hikers served 21 individuals with developmental disabilities.
    Expenses $175,431 · grants $21,719 · revenue $5,976
