These initiatives were instrumental in furthering our mission to raise public awareness and preserve the rich tradition of Jazz Music.

Program accomplishments

  • MINNESOTA HARD BOP COLLECTIVE "Sit In Series" PERFORMANCE WORKSHOPS: Phase 1: Public-school outreach - The MHBC will visit public school band programs to show the students techniques on preparation for sitting in such as practicing with a metronome transposition and harmonic form repetition. MHBC professionals will also briefly discuss the origins of jazz music which evolved from enslaved Africans in the southern United States. A repertoire list of tunes that are the foundation for jazz improvisation will be provided. Phase 2: Performance Sit-In Series - At each concert the students will come up and play individually one-on-one with the band. Phase 3: Evaluation and Review The attendance and progress of each student will be monitored. There will be a final survey for all participants focusing on how they gained confidence overcame any fears and were inspired to practice and prepare. The MHBC will review assessments to make changes to the program and encourage continued involvement of the students and musicians. The goal of the MHBC Performance Sit-In Series is to provide a formal opportunity for music students to sit-in with professional Jazz musicians which aims to provide students with performance skills and confidence-building that is not available in the classroom or open mic jam sessions. A jazz musicians definition of "sitting in" is to participate in a working group as a guest usually to play a couple of songs at the invitation of the band. This is how professional Jazz musicians typically audition and introduce one another and this is the audition format of most college music school programs. The students will learn this essential skill and experience the importance of surrounding themselves with those who are more skilled. Phase 1: MHBC musicians will visit Twin Cities public high schools to help the students prepare for the series during band rehearsal times - example of Twin Cities high schools visited for 2023 season: Central South Southwest and Washburn. Phase 2: MHBC Sit-In Series performances will be at the Metronome Brewing Co: Fingals Cave Stage - 385 Broadway St St Paul MN 55101;All concert times are between 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm on Saturdays Sundays Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students ages 19 usually dont have the opportunity to meet and play with professional jazz musicians until college. The Sit-In Series will impact an entire generation of MN jazz musicians by the experience and knowledge theyve gained from performing with professionals while in high school assuring that MN can draw upon future jazz talent for years to come. Public and Individual donations leveraged financial support through optional donations from attendees to the MetroNOME and MHBC Educational Foundations further supporting MN music performance and education. Audiences rarely hear jazz performed at this level for free at accessible times and venues. Parents will get to see their childrens participation and growth which is impossible from the classroom. Contracted Musicians will shift the focus away from themselves towards helping others and mentorship. Demographics: 27% Female; 73% Male;60% BIPOC; 40% WHITE; 50% LGBTQIA2+. Meaningful access is created through the opportunity to learn and experience the essential skill of "sitting in" which is to participate as a guest in a performance with a musical working group. This is how professional Jazz musicians typically introduce audition and interview one another; Sitting in is synonymous with networking and is the preferred audition format of most college music school programs; students will be able to practice for college audition repertoire during the Sit-In Series. They will learn to recognize and pick up nonverbal musical cues which are a key aspect of jazz performances. These cues are difficult to learn in the classroom private lessons student combo or open mic jam sessions. Students will learn the importance of surrounding themselves with more skilled musicians as a learning experience. This is an essential life skill: success is best achieved by surrounding oneself with those who elevate.
