Mission
Diversify Whitewater is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that works to promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in paddlesports by removing the barriers that may exist for Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) and allies in kayaking, canoeing, rafting, and stand-up paddleboarding.
Program accomplishments
- We deliver on this mission in three ways: 1. Signature Paddling Events hosted by DW, 2. Sponsorships (paddling opportunities hosted by other organizations) and 3. Paddling Scholarships for individuals. Strategic priorities over the next two years are the following: 1. Signature Paddling Events: Maintain current footprint: Strengthen current annual event footprint, which has been 12 - 14 events per year across 6 - 7 states. The key to success here is building a strong local volunteer base via local clubs / organizations and individuals. Our focus will be to leverage organizations more than we have in the past as our current reliance on individuals places significant pressure on a small number of people, introducing risk. If we can leverage grant money to cost-share with organizations, we can reduce this risk. 2. Sponsorships: This is a growable segment for us - the benefit of this line is twofold: 1) DW can fund opportunities that support our mission with low operational and marketing lift and 2) as we can build more strategic partnerships (i.e., with organizations that have frequent opportunities for paddling, we can create a channel for continuity for paddlers who have had their early experience(s) at a DW Signature Paddling Event. The key again is to create stronger partnerships with other organizations that may have less ability to fund these kinds of initiatives than DW does, but that have stronger ability to operationally deliver than we do. 3. Paddling Scholarships: This is our smallest segment, but it is critical to our ultimate goal of building a cohort of BIPOC boaters - implicit in this goal is that there are a range of BIPOC boaters to create representation across experience levels, i.e., there are recreational paddlers, instructors, competitive paddlers, etc. Scholarships are aimed at those who want to take things to the next level by pursuing opportunities like ACA Instructor Certification. The key here is to ensure we are identifying the right talent and sharing this opportunity so we can maximize the growth of the paddlers who want to do this. The activation here would be to improve our communication around this opportunity and find ways to streamline applicants' ability to capitalize on the opportunity. The barriers to entering the paddlesports community are both material (access to equipment and instruction), and cultural (lack of representation and mentorship for formerly marginalized communities). Diversify Whitewater sponsors events that normalize people of color in wild and scenic spaces, on waterways, and within the paddlesports community to mitigate these barriers. Our no-cost paddling events include free paddling instruction from experienced volunteers and certified professionals, and use of boats and equipment. Since our first year in 2020, Diversify Whitewater has supported over 800 participants at 25 events or scholarship opportunities. Through the generosity of top brands in the adventure and paddlesports industry including Immersion Research, Liquidlogic Kayaks, Kokatat, Watershed Drybags, Badfish SUP, NRS, and others, we give away paddlesports gear and apparel to each participant to facilitate their continuation of paddling outside of our events. Last year, we also started the Paddling Dream Package, which gave six deserving participants a full setup of paddling gear, including a Liquidlogic kayak or Badfish SUP, a Werner paddle, and gift cards to cover the cost of other gear. We plan to provide six additional participants with paddling setups in 2023. Diversify Whitewater also increases representation in the paddling community by centering non-white paddlers on our social media, within our donor and sponsors' websites, and by providing mentorship to new BIPOC paddlers. At and beyond our paddling events, DW seeks to educate the broader whitewater community on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to foster a more welcoming and supportive industry.Expenses $14,689 · grants $50,791
