Mission
NORTHERN VIRGINIA FOOD RESCUE IS RESPONDING TO THE DISCONNECT BETWEEN WASTING 40% OF OUR FOOD WHILE 1 IN 6 GO HUNGRY. NORTHERN VIRGINIA FOOD RESCUE AIMS TO ADDRESS THE DISCONNECT IN DISTRIBUTION-IN SUPPLY AND ACCESS-BY RESCUING FOOD ABOUT TO GO TO WASTE AND DIRECTLY DISTRIBUTING TO ORGANIZATIONS THAT SERVE COMMUNITIES IN NEED. ONE GOAL OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA FOOD RESCUE IS TO BRING HEALTHY OPTIONS TO THE TABLE FOR FAMILIES IN NEED. WE ARE COMMITTED TO HELPING BREAK THE LINK BETWEEN POVERTY AND POOR HEALTH. RATHER THAN BEING SENT TO A LANDFILL, RESCUED FOOD IS USED TO CREATE NUTRITIOUS MEALS FOR SOME OF THE REGION'S FOOD INSECURE RESIDENTS.
Program accomplishments
- ACCOMPLISHMENTS/DESCRIPTION: NORTHERN VIRGINIA FOOD RESCUE WORKS AT THE INTERSECTION OF HUNGER RELIEF, PUBLIC HEALTH, AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY TO ADDRESS THE ROOT CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES OF FOOD INSECURITY. BY RESCUING AND REDISTRIBUTING SURPLUS FOOD THAT WOULD OTHERWISE GO TO WASTE, WE ENSURE THAT RESIDENTS OF GREATER PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY AND THE SURROUNDING REGION HAVE CONSISTENT ACCESS TO FRESH, NUTRITIOUS FOOD. WE RESCUED 2,403,691 LBS OF FOOD; PROVIDED 2,003,075 MEALS TO THE COMMUNITY; MITIGATED 2,841,009 METRIC TONS OF CO2 EMISSIONS AND PROVIDED FOOD TO 110 NONPROFITS AND SCHOOLS.Expenses $5,092,253 · grants $4,615,087
