Program accomplishments

  • Sustain Our Abilities was the organizer of Climate Health 2023 an international hybrid educational meeting. Based upon the success of this program Sustain Our Abilities team members performed due diligence assessing the risks and benefits of expanding the organization from just working on disability and climate change to expanding our mission to advancing education and research regarding climate change and health. It was decided the impact of our programming would be greater with low risk and we just filed a name change to the Climate and Health Society Corporation. In conjunction with this name change we will also be expanding our membership which was introduced in 2024 to professionals in the disability and rehabilitation field to include professionals in the clinical health areas public health and climate change research.
    Expenses $4,000 · grants $8,500
  • Sustain Our Abilities has had a mission to work with the International Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation The International Spinal Cord Society and their affiliates including amongst others the Australia New Zealand Spinal Cord Society the Society Italian of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the Congress of Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation of the Hellenic Spinal Cord Section of the Hellenic Society of PRM. In 2024 we attended held courses and events on climate change an d disability and hosted exhibits at the major organizational meetings in Antwerp Belgium for the International Spinal Cord Society and Sydney Australia for the International Spinal Cord Society. Moreover we had presentations at the Australia New Zealand annual meeting and the Hellenic and the Italian meeting. We also initiated a membership option for the organization this year and were able to recruit approximately 500 new members from six continents through these venues.
    Expenses $12,575
  • Another service of Sustain Our Abilities is educating the general public about climate change environmental justice for persons with disabilities and the need for a healthy environment. In 2023 we updated our website so that it has significant resources about climate change and disability and worked to make sure that information about the website was disseminated widely. In 2024 we also distributed cooling vests and cooling towels to persons with disabilities directly and to professionals with a goal of them using these items for persons with disabilities. As part of our US mission in 2024 we also travelled to Puerto Rico to attend and participated in the American Spinal Injury Association meeting interacting with local officials in Ponce Puerto Rico and discussing collaborations and potential grants related to disaster preparedness and disability.
    Expenses $10,577
  • One of the main functions of Sustain Our Abilities has been the Graham journey-the Green Route Aiding Healthy Adaptation and Mitigation an active transport journey from Canada to Key West aimed at bringing attention to the benefits of active transportation the need for improvements in accessibility and walkability in the US and the hazards of extreme weather and climate change. This walk recumbent bike ride was completed in 2024 with much of the journey being posted on social media. In addition it is planned that a book will be published in 2025 that will detail the journey and whose proceeds will support the nonprofit organization.
    Expenses $11,383
  • Another Sustain Our Abilities initiative is to share information about disability rehabilitation and climate change with people that are not in the rehabilitation field. In light of this in 2024 the team at Sustain Our Abilities edited a textbook called Climate Change and Disability: A Collaborative Approach to a Sustainable Future for All. This required international networking and up to date knowledge amongst the editors and authors. As such the editorial team of the textbook participated in national climate and health meetings so as to share information related to climate change and disability and to garner more up to date information. Events the team participated in in 2025 included climate week which was held in New York City and a course on geospatial mapping at the Mt. Sinai Exposomics Institute.
