  • PROJECT 1 CHAPTER HOUSE RENOVATION We embarked on a major renovation of a Chapter House to provide accommodation, conference facilities and respite space for our members and the public. The project required a great deal of planning and effort from many different directions. As the building was very old, we first had to make it structurally safe before any renovation work could be undertaken. We managed to save costs by using architects and structural engineers who were sympathetic to our organization, and we used skilled men from our own ranks whenever we could. We had to install new windows and carry out a complete rewire and plumbing throughout the building to bring it into line with various safety codes and make it fit for purpose in a modern setting. We still need to install a heating system and fully decorate the entire building. The project should be completed next year, as we only work on it when labour and funds permit. Progress has been possible because of volunteer labor. Members have given evenings, weekends and holidays
