Program accomplishments

  • Going Green for a Cool, Healthy Jackson (CHJ) funded by RWJF The "Going Green for a Cool, Healthy Jackson" (CHJ) project developed nature-based solutions to address Urban Heat Islands in formerly redlined districts, affecting overburdened, underserved communities in Jackson, Mississippi. It was a grassroots-led initiative supported by local and national experts. The project partnered with communities to co-create a vision, plans and implementation for green infrastructure design that mitigates heat and provides social, economic and ecological co-benefits to a historic Black district that is a victim of racism-driven urban decay. Strong partnerships with the Jackson Redevelopment Authority, Communities of Shalom, the Jackson Community Design Center and community members create a blueprint for using green infrastructure and urban forestry specifically to build holistic climate, economic and social resilience not only across Jackson, but the whole Southeast region.

The full design for how sites 2 and 3 are going to be developed (including specie selection) was created and illustrated including rendering and a flyover. It was unveiled during a press conference attended by community members and press on May 28, 2024: The survey instrument was developed by CAPA Strategies, followed by an effective campaign (conducted by Communities of Shalom) to recruit volunteers secured volunteers for perception data collection which took place during the Juneteenth celebration organized on the project site on June 22, 2024. Volunteers collected 127 survey questionnaires, 115 of which were fully and properly completed. The questionnaire data was then analyzed in by CAPA Strategies. The installation process of four stationary heat/humidity censors was completed and the measurements were collected on weekly basis for a 6 week duration period (August-September) by volunteers and send to CAPA for analysis.
