Mission

To provide a venue to connect diverse students and professionals to advance and apply conservation knowledge; to welcome, support, and empower all voices engaged in conservation to contribute to equitable solutions and catalyze wonder for the natural world; to advance conservation science and practice, through the biennial North American Congress for Conservation Biology; membership and development services; and education, policy, community engagement, and chapter services.

990-EZ for the year ended December 31, 2025

Program accomplishments

  • North American Congress for Conservation Biology (NACCB) - The biennial NACCB represents an important facet of SCBNA's work to foster communication among conservation scientists and practitioners in North America. The goal of NACCB is to provide a forum for presenting and discussing new research, developments and strategies that will inform policy changes and conservation practices to address today's conservation challenges. NACCB 2026 will be held July 12-16, 2026 in Milwaukee, WI and will be jointly hosted with the Society for Ecological Restoration (and the Society for Ecological Restoration's Midwest Great Lakes Chapter). Multiple workshops, short courses, interactive sessions, symposia and contributed oral, speed and poster presentations are planned for the Congress, along with several opportunities for professional development, networking, and collaboration. A majority of planning was carried out for the Congress in 2025, and upwards of 700 attendees are expected to attend from both host organizations.
    Expenses $67,469
  • Education; Policy; Community, Access, Reach, and Engagement; and Student & Chapters Services - Members (~1200) benefit from SCBNA guidance and initiatives including trainings, guidance/collaboration on policy statements, and other opportunities to strengthen the conservation science professional community at the local, national and continental levels. Activities included winter, spring summer, and fall workshops alongside professional development webinars and a mini virtual conference (Education Forum) in late summer. All events and programs were well-attended (>1400 registrations) and were made available on the organization's website for future viewing. Moreover, in preparation for NACCB 2026, the organization continued to build on their support of student-led Chapters across the region (including assisting with the incorporation and reincorporation of five Chapters) and developed initiatives to maximize conference accessibility for attendees. Strategic partnerships and collaborations were also developed with other conservation organizations as part of the events and programs outlined above.
    Expenses $31,641
  • Membership and Development Services - SCBNA provides a strong collective voice for the science and practice of conservation. SCBNA maintains a news blog and regular newsletter, and supports members' conservation science efforts by providing resources, events, and other opportunities to strengthen the conservation science professional community at the local, national and continental levels. SCBNA also shares opportunities and resources with its membership via its social media channels. In addition to past and current newsletters and the news blog, the SCBNA website is home to several resources related to the programs detailed in 4a and 4b above, and was updated to facilitate viewing and use by members.
    Expenses $31,641
