990 for the year ended May 31, 2025

Program accomplishments

  • Annual Otsukimi Moon Viewing Festival (Social/Cultural Programming): Held in the fall of 2024 at the Haggard Park in Plano, this free event showcased various Japanese cultures to the community. It featured performances on taiko drum, a young girls choir singing Japanese songs, sumo wrestling demonstrations, ikebana flower arrangements, bonsai tree displays, a Japanese tea ceremony, and more. The event was attended by over 2,000 people at the park.
    Expenses $76,380 · revenue $20,830
  • Japan-in-a-Suitcase (Educational Programming): This community outreach program continued mainly for primary school children. Staff is sent to school classrooms and libraries to introduce facts about Japan, its culture, and other traditions.
    Expenses $52,104 · revenue $27,787
  • Japan Currents Symposium (Business Programming): This annual event brought expert perspectives on current and new trends in business, politics, technologies, or policies that impact the relationships between the U.S. and Japan. The symposium was sponsored by National Association of Japan America Societies and the Embassy of Japan, with support from the Southern Methodist University Tower Center of Public Policy & International Affairs. The event featured a keynote speaker with multiple expert panelists and has historically been quite popular, with attendance at maximum capacity of around 100 people.
    Expenses $43,195
  • Dallas-Sendai Activities (Ambassador Programming): As in past years, we selected two runners to participate in the Sendai International Half-Marathon, accompanied by some of our members, and the cost of travel to Japan was partly covered. Also, during the New Year celebration, we worked with local Japanese language teachers, and their students created 50-60 New Year greeting cards. These handmade cards contained artwork and New Year messages written in Japanese and were sent to Sendai's Morinosato home for senior citizens for their enjoyment.
