Mission
Help Kids Inida's (HKI) primary purpose is to raise funds in support of the work of HKI's partner, the Betsy Elizabet Trust (BET), located in Porayar, Tamil Nadu, India. BET is an initiative to improve the life of the poor in rural villages, primarily of Dalit families, through the care and education of young children. BET, a nonprofit organization licensed by the government of India, works with HKI under a Memorandum of Understanding. HKI funds three of BET's five preschools; the other two are supported by Asha for Education and the International School of Geneva, Switzerland. 170 children attend the HKI supported schools. Funding covers all operating expenses, including salaries for 27 staff, food, health care, transportation, utilities and maintenance, insurance, uniforms, administration and necessary building projects. HKI also supports a community health center and purchased land for a small farm that provides employment and food for local families, and the preschools.
Program accomplishments
- Provide Education to the Dalit Children -- The preschools supported by HKI opened in 2002, 2002, and 2010 in response to community need. HKI also starting funding a fourth pre-school. The schools select children, 2-5 years old, from families in the greatest need. There is no charge. The schools provide safety, a sound preschool education, dental and health care, full nutrition, and socialization. They receive frequent guests, both Indian and foreign, and coordinate with a local international school for environmental projects. Children who attended the BET preschools are now completing high school at a rate far exceeding their peers and the majority go on to trade school or college. HKI agreed to fund a 4th preschool program for FY 2024 - 2025. The preschool's Swiss based funding organization was focused on raising funding to construct a new school building and needed temporary financial support from HKI.Expenses $69,950 · grants $69,950
- Help Provide Food to the Dalit Preschools and their Community -- The BET preschools are an integral part of their communities. During the pandemic shutdowns the schools provided free dry rations to children's families and neighbors in need. With HKI funds, BET purchased two acres of land. This community garden provides much needed food at a reduced rate as well as employment since all work is by hand. With school back in session, BET's Sunday Food Program sends food home with children for the weekend as food is scarce in their households.Expenses $4,100 · grants $4,100
- Help Provide Health care to the Dalit Children and their families -- All children receive regular health care, immunizations, and growth monitoring by BET's registered nurses. Weekly clinic visits address those needing advanced care. At school, hygiene, an essential factor in further education, is taught and practiced throughout the day. In addition, one of the preschools has an adjoining health center that serves the whole community. Without ready access to any health care, the health center is used heavily by pregnant women, the elderly, and others with acute and chronic conditions. HKI funds this health center.Expenses $25,000 · grants $25,000
