Mission

Provide leadership and support to persons with brain injuries via a wide variety of projects and programs in resource coordination, prevention, advocacy and self-determination.

990 for the year ended June 30, 2026

Program accomplishments

  • In FY 2026, BIAMD received more than 3,500 phone calls, e-mails, and social media inquiries from people with brain injuries, their loved ones, caregivers, and other professionals interested in gaining access to brain injury-related information, resources, and guidance. BIAMD's informational website www.biamd.org received more than 2,800 visits on average every month with resources concerning concussion, brain injury services, and Maryland Brain Injury Waiver being the most requested content. BIAMD continued its weekly #5ThoughtsFriday educational newsletter that was delivered to more than 7,000 individuals with brain injuries, their family members, healthcare providers, professionals, and community partners. In FY 2026, BIAMD continued its virtual educational webinar series delivering accessible information and education about brain injury, rehabilitation, available resources, and other matters related to the lives of people with brain injury. The partnership between BIAMD and the Maryland Department of Health, Behavioral Health Administration continued to provide four TBI Waiver Case Managers and one full-time administrator to help administer the Maryland Brain Injury Waiver Program. BIAMD offered continuous case management services for more than 120 individuals receiving TBI Waiver services. The services included quarterly contacts, Plans of Service development and monitoring, redeterminations, Community Settings Questionnaires, coordination with service providers and state agencies, and participant needs' assistance. BIAMD continued to assist people with brain injury and their families with information on Brain Injury Waiver eligibility, enrollment, and community-based services' access. During FY 2026, BIAMD continued to develop its continuum of brain injury services providing resource facilitation and navigation services. This helps people with brain injuries and their family members find out about and get connected to appropriate healthcare, rehabilitation, behavioral health, housing, benefits, and other community-based services. BIAMD's weekly virtual Check-In Chat continued in FY 2026 and transitioned to a peer-led social program for people with brain injuries. The program has an average participation of 16 people from five states and the District of Columbia. Check-In Chat offers participants an opportunity to meet their peers, exchange experiences, and engage in social interactions while fighting the feeling of loneliness and building up a community of people impacted by brain injury. BIAMD's additional education, outreach, and community engagement activities continued in FY 2026. Those efforts increase the access to brain injury-specific education, resources, and support for people with brain injuries, their families, healthcare professionals, and community partners. Funding challenges at the federal and state levels are one of the main problems for the brain injury community. Increased uncertainty and reduced funding for brain injury research, surveillance, education, outreach, and community-based services prove once again the necessity of BIAMD's activities in providing information and assistance, connecting people with appropriate services, and advocating the needs of Marylanders impacted by brain injury.
