Mission

Formed in 1968, The Vermont Archaeological Society (VAS) is a volunteer organization comprised of professional and avocational archaeologists and the interested public. The Society is committed to raising the awareness of Vermont's past, while also protecting its valuable cultural resources from injury and exploitation. VAS embraces the interests of prehistoric, historic, underwater, and industrial archaeology. Its membership is comprised of people with interests in all of these fields. It supports archaeology in the state in many ways, and functions as a forum for information exchange between professionals and avocationals. Ultimately, it is committed to educating the public about the cultural heritage of the state of Vermont.

Program accomplishments

  • In 2023, VAS published online newsletters and maintained social media feeds for professional and amateur archaeologists and interested members of the general public. These newsletters generally come out bi-monthly and contain articles on events sponsored by VAS or by Vermont's state archaeologists, including local archaeological volunteer opportunities, local speaking events, and other activities. The organization also cross-publishes in-person and online events at various museums and sites that are likely to be of interest to its readers. These newsletters and social media feeds are offered free of charge to the public.
  • In most years, VAS provides speakers and staffs informational booths, usually members of its board, to various archaeological and historical events in Vermont and the surrounding area sponsored by other archaeological and historical societies. It also will provide letters of support to other groups for grants requesting money for digs and curating artifacts from prior digs in order to preserve Vermont's archaeological record. In 2023, the Vermont Archaeological Society Inc. offered, for the general public, both online and in person talks given by local archaeologists about various topics of interest to the advancement of the study of Vermont archaeology.
