Mission
Education & Training on Human Trafficking Recognition; Training & Education on the Intersection of Substance Use Disorder and Human Trafficking; Education on Trauma-informed Response and Patient-Centered Care; Education of Pregnant and Parenting Moms with Substance Use Disorders; Program Evaluation of Destiny House a recovery home for mothers and their children
Program accomplishments
- Qualitative and Quantitative Program Evaluation of McShins Destiny House a three-year-old recovery home serving pregnant and parenting mothers and their children. This work included gift card compensation for staff and program participants who guided our process ensuring the project remained survivor-informed. We have also applied for a local grant to address a critical gap in recovery services: the addition of a structured transition program before mothers leave Destiny House. This program will reinforce newly developed coping skills strengthen personal agency and confidence and support more stable outcomes. Ultimately the added programming will reduce the risk of return to use unemployment and homelessness. We will also expand McShins data collection to support continuous quality improvement.Expenses $2,000
- This year in addition to supervising medical students at McShin I served as the task instructor for two MSW interns from VCU. We continued our weekly programming at McShin a recovery center for adults with substance use disorders by facilitating the Tuesday afternoon group sessions conducting research and providing recommendations for program improvement based on best practices and social medical science. This year the first Tuesday afternoon session became arts-based to deepen engagement and enrich topic discussions. The second session focused on Pilates and other cardio exercises and we were able to provide a variety of exercise tools to enhance participants experience. To add to the fun we included prizes-10 Walmart gift cards-for winners of activities we hosted.Expenses $4,959
- I connected the medical students and MSW interns to community partners where they were able to learn about and assist in the organizations endeavors. I frequently hosted team gatherings at my home or at a restaurant to build inter-agency community and promote group fun to relieve stress that students often experience in graduate school.Expenses $2,000
