Mission

Apex Protection Project is dedicated to protecting wolves and wolfdogs through educational experiences, rescue and advocacy with the dream of living in a world where wolf and all species are highly valued, protected and respected for the balance they bring to the ecosystem and for the gifts they offer to humanity.

Program accomplishments

  • During 2024, Apex Protection Project continued its mission of rescuing, rehabilitating, educating, and advocating for wolves and wolfdogs through a number of significant initiatives. The organization coordinated the rescue of 16 wolfdogs from the Barstow Animal Shelter and arranged their safe transport to qualified rescue organizations and sanctuaries in Colorado, Wisconsin, and Northern California. Apex also secured the release of seven wolfdog puppies and six adult wolfdogs confiscated during a law enforcement operation, placing all of the puppies in Qualified homes and transporting the adults to Oregon, where the organization raised the funds necessary to build a new enclosure for their long-term care. In another rescue effort, Apex saved six wolfdogs from a hoarding situation in Northern California. Two of these animals were brought to Apex, where a new enclosure was constructed to provide them with permanent care. One wolfdog required several months of rehabilitation before being transported to a qualified sanctuary in New Mexico, while the remaining animals were placed with approved rescue organizations and permanent homes. Apex also rescued a wolfdog named Wolfy from a homeless encampment along with her two 2-day-old puppies after Wolfy had suffered a gunshot wound that required the amputation of one of her legs. The organization provided emergency veterinary care for Wolfy while staff and volunteers hand-raised the newborn puppies around the clock, ultimately ensuring all three animals were placed in loving, permanent homes. In addition to its rescue efforts, Apex provided free educational presentations to more than 3,000 students, promoting a greater understanding of wolves and wolfdogs. The organization also presented its Humanity of Wolves presentation to sold-out audiences at the Aquarium of the Pacific, Oak Canyon Nature Center, and Muzeo Museum, furthering its mission of educating the public and dispelling myths surrounding these often misunderstood animals.
