Mission
TO PROVIDE CRITICAL PHILANTHROPIC SUPPORT TO THE PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY MEMORIAL LIBRARY SYSTEM AND TO HELP STRENGTHEN THE LIBRARY'S CAPACITY TO INNOVATE, ADAPT TO CHANGE, AND ENSURE OUR LIBRARIES REMAIN A VITAL RESOURCE FOR ALL IN PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY NOW AND IN THE FUTURE.
Program accomplishments
- BOOKS FROM BIRTH IS A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE DOLLY PARTON IMAGINATION LIBRARY THAT PROVIDES A FREE BOOK TO CHILDREN EACH MONTH IN THE MAIL UP TO THEIR FIFTH BIRTHDAY. IT IS PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY'S PRIMARY EARLY LITERACY INITIATIVE. BOOKS FROM BIRTH REGISTRATION BUNDLES ARE PROVIDED TO ALL FAMILIES WHO REGISTER FOR BOOKS FROM BIRTH PRIOR TO OUT-PROCESSING FROM GIVING BIRTH. THE BUNDLES INCLUDE A STARTER BOOK, AGE-APPROPRIATE TOY PARENTS CAN USE TO SUPPORT EARLY LITERACY EDUCATION, AND INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS ABOUT THE TEACHING NEWBORNS LITERACY SKILLS. THIS OUTREACH INITIATIVE HAS RESULTED IN A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN BOOKS FROM BIRTH REGISTRATIONS, WHICH NOW EXCEED 14,000 (UP FROM APPROXIMATELY 13,000 AT THE POINT OF STARTING THIS OUTREACH INITIATIVE). PGCMLS FOUNDATION IS ALSO SUPPORTING PART OF THE OVERALL BOOKS FROM BIRTH PROGRAM COSTS, APPROXIMATELY 10% OF THE OVERALL PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION COST.
- CAPITAL ONE DIGITAL LITERACY GRANT-THE CAPITAL ONE GRANT PROVIDES INVALUABLE FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR DIGITAL EQUITY AND INCLUSION EFFORTS FOR THE AFGHAN COMMUNITIES, ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE WHO ARE LOW ENGLISH PROFICIENCY AND ARE IMMIGRANTS OR REFUGEES. WITH THE FUNDS, WE WERE ABLE TO HIRE A DARI AND PASHTO SPEAKING PROGRAM COORDINATOR AND EDUCATOR. WE WERE ALSO ABLE TO PURCHASE KAJEET MOBILE INTERNET HUBS,SO THE PROGRAM COULD BE HELD IN SITES OUTSIDE OF THE LIBRARY. DIGITAL LEARNING FOR AFGHAN COMMUNITIES (DARI AND PASHTO SPEAKERS): PROGRAMS RAN FOR SIX SESSIONS AT FOUR LOCATIONS FROM APRIL TO JUNE 2025: PRINCE GEORGES COMMUNITY COLLEGE (IN PERSON AND ONLINE) AND PARKVIEW GARDEN APARTMENTS (IN PERSON AND ONLINE.) THERE WERE AN AVERAGE OF 10 PARTICIPANTS PER SESSION. TOPICS INCLUDED COMPUTER BASICS (KEYBOARD AND MOUSE), LIBRARY ONLINE RESOURCES FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING LIKE VOXYENGEN AND TRANSPARENT LANGUAGE, DIGITAL FOOTPRINT, FRAUD AWARENESS, AND DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS LIKE ZOOM. THE PURPOSE OF THE WORKSHOP SERIES WAS TO PROVIDE A SURFACE LEVEL UNDERSTANDING WHERE PARTICIPANTS CAN BEGIN TO HAVE CONFIDENCE WITH A WIDE RANGE OF TECHNOLOGY TOOLS, CONCEPTS, AND RESOURCES THAT CAN INCREASE THEIR ABILITY TO BETTER NAVIGATE THEIR PERSONAL AND WORK LIFE.
- THE CITY OF BOWIE PROVIDED FUNDING TO EXPAND THE OFFERINGS OF THE BOWIE BRANCH LIBRARY TEEN ZONE. THE BRANCH IS LOCATED ADJACENT TO THE BOWIE HIGH SCHOOL AND HAS HUNDREDS OF TEENS VISIT AFTER SCHOOL EACH DAY. THE GRANT PROVIDED EQUIPMENT TO ENTERTAIN, EDUCATE AND BUILD NEW SKILLS SUCH AS RECORDING EQUIPMENT, GAMING CONSOLES, AND COMPUTERS. HAVING A SAFE AND PRODUCTIVE SPACE FOR TEENS TO SPEND TIME AFTER SCHOOL HAS MANY POSITIVE BENEFITS AND OUTCOMES.
- SOCIAL JUSTICE CAMP FOR TEENS-THE FOUNDATION SUPPORTED THE PURCHASE OF SUPPLIES FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE CAMP FOR TEENS WHICH WAS HELD IN THE SUMMER OF 2025 AT THE SURRATTS-CLINTON BRANCH LIBRARY. THE 15 TEENS LEARNED HOW TO ADVOCATE FOR CHANGE, CONNECT WITH THEIR COMMUNITY, AND TRANSFORM THEIR IDEAS INTO REAL IMPACT DURING A WEEK-LONG DAY CAMP.
