Program accomplishments

  • YO (Heaven Through the Backdoor) Project description: Unfolding in a magical world of memory and imagination, YO explores the mystery of death through the unconventional friendship of Anna and Yo, two kindred spirits born 49 years apart. Using intricately built miniature sets and other creations, the film juxtaposes intimate vrit of Yo's last year with Anna's creative interpretations of her stories. In 2024 final stage editorial and production on this film was the main focus of our creative work. We showed an excerpt of the film in Los Angeles as a part of the Sundance Institute alumni focus event. We are currently in Post-Production and plan to premiere the project in early 2026. The project received support from Tribeca Film Institute, Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Creative Work Fund, Headlands Center for the Arts among others

  • Heaven Through the Backdoor Project description: Part myth, part documentary, Heaven Through the Backdoor is a multi-platform documentary that explores identity and spirituality through the unconventional friendship of Anna and Yo, two kindred spirits born 49 years apart. The film is a testament to the enduring power of friendship and what we learn from each other in life and after death. In 2023 production on this film was the main focus of our creative work. We are currently in Post-Production and plan to premiere the project in 2025. The project received support from Tribeca Film Institute, Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Creative Work Fund, Headlands Center for the Arts among others. In 2021 we hosted multiple in person open studio events at our studio at the Noonan building where we showed our work in progress media and sculptural installation work.
  • The Genius of Marian (feature documentary film) & The Genius of Caring (ongoing multimedia and multiplatform outreach campaign) Our flagship initiative, The Genius of Caring addresses an array of interconnected challenges that arise through the aging process. For individuals with caregiving intensive diseases and those who care for them, the experience can be extremely isolating at a time when support and communication is needed the most. This work is designed to reach people remotely and we remain dedicated to this mission. In November 2024, we launched we launched the new The Genius of Marian streaming site. The new website makes our feature length film The Genius of Marian and all of our short films and educational material free and accessible to the public.

Our support provides a safe space to work, access to state of the art equipment, educational programming and professional development. In 2016, we expanded our reach in the West African subregion by launching The WeOwnTV Filmmaker Fellowship, a film fund and professional development program supporting the production of independent documentaries directed by West African filmmakers. We also began a collaborative producing initiative that focuses on creating opportunities for filmmakers from underrepresented communities and are partnered with both US-based and international teams on a small collection of impressive projects.

  • WeOwnTV / WeSurvive / Filmmaker Fellowship Project description: In 2024 we continued our support of the WeOwnTV Freetown Media Centre. We helped them secure a new lease for the media centre, supported community outreach efforts for The New Boats and supported production of a handful of new projects. while also premiering a set of exciting projects we co-produced. The New Boats is an investigative documentary that presents an eye-opening look at the impact of International Industrialized fishing in West African waters and it's disastrous effect on local communities. The film premiered on ARTE in 2023. Two standout new projects we are supporting are Arthur Pratts Darkness & the Light, and Lansana Barmmy Boy Mansarays, Ar-mant Mu-baike (Water is coming). Darkness & the Light is a poetic meditation on the intersections of race, Christianity, and morality that confronts contradictions at the heart of Americas spiritual and political identity. Ar-mant Mu-baike (Water is coming) follows the mayor of Freetown as she has to navigate both political and environmental challenges amongst multiple exploding consequences of the climate crisis in Sierra Leone.
