Mission

THE OCMULGEE NATIONAL PARK AND PRESERVE INITIATIVE (ONPPI) IS A COMMUNITY BASED GROUP OF MIDDLE GEORGIA AND MUSCOGEE (CREEK) CITIZENS WORKING TOGETHER TO EXPAND THE CURRENT SITE OF THE OCMULGEE MOUNDS NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK INTO GEORGIAS FIRST NATIONAL PARK AND PRESERVE.

990 for the year ended June 30, 2025

Program accomplishments

  • DURING THE YEAR, THE OCMULGEE NATIONAL PARK AND PRESERVE INITIATIVE (ONPPI) ADVANCED ITS MISSION AS A COMMUNITY-BASED COALITION OF MIDDLE GEORGIA AND MUSCOGEE (CREEK) CITIZENS WORKING TO EXPAND OCMULGEE MOUNDS NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK INTO GEORGIAS FIRST NATIONAL PARK AND PRESERVE. ONPPI CONDUCTED EXTENSIVE COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND EDUCATION BY PRESENTING TO AND TOURING CIVIC, COMMUNITY, AND STAKEHOLDER GROUPS ON 28 OCCASIONS, REACHING APPROXIMATELY 1,300 INDIVIDUALS. THESE EFFORTS INCREASED PUBLIC AWARENESS OF THE CULTURAL, HISTORICAL, ENVIRONMENTAL, AND ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF NATIONAL PARK DESIGNATION. ONPPI ALSO HOSTED PARTY FOR THE PARK, A MAJOR COMMUNITY AWARENESS AND RECOGNITION EVENT SUPPORTED BY MORE THAN 13 SPONSORS, HIGHLIGHTING LOCAL LEADERSHIP THROUGH AWARDS FOR CULTURAL SUPPORT, COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, AND ECONOMIC STEWARDSHIP. THE ORGANIZATION SUPPORTED LEGISLATIVE PROGRESS FOR THE OCMULGEE NATIONAL PARK AND PRESERVE ESTABLISHMENT ACT, INCLUDING TESTIMONY AND PUBLIC EDUCATION FOLLOWING ITS INTRODUCTION IN THE 118TH CONGRESS, AND CONTINUED COLLABORATION WITH LEGISLATIVE PARTNERS LEADING TO THE BILLS REINTRODUCTION IN THE 119TH CONGRESS IN MARCH 2025. AS NOTED IN THE PRIOR YEARS FILING, ONPPI CONTINUED DEVELOPMENT OF A REGIONAL STRATEGIC PLAN TO ADDRESS THE LONG-TERM IMPACTS AND OPPORTUNITIES OF EXPANDING THE SITE FROM A NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK TO A NATIONAL PARK AND PRESERVE. TO SUPPORT INCREASED PROGRAM ACTIVITY, ONPPI EXPANDED STAFFING FROM TWO TO FIVE EMPLOYEES AND RELOCATED TO A LARGER OFFICE IN DOWNTOWN MACON. THESE ACTIVITIES PROVIDED SIGNIFICANT PUBLIC BENEFIT BY STRENGTHENING CIVIC PARTICIPATION, HONORING INDIGENOUS AND REGIONAL HISTORY, AND ADVANCING LONG-TERM CONSERVATION AND PRESERVATION EFFORTS IN MIDDLE GEORGIA.
