Mission

MSTA advocates for and empowers public educators so they can teach.

990 for the year ended June 30, 2025

Program accomplishments

  • Educator Services: MSTA provides the knowledge, expertise, technical assistance, research and professional consultation educators need in order to enhance their job-related skills, grow professionally and better serve Missouri students. To this end, MSTA staff works directly with education professionals in all 518 Missouri public school districts; works directly with education students in more than 40 colleges and universities and promotes the teaching profession to 1164 high school students in 44 high schools across Missouri. Specific accomplishments included comprehensive research on teacher salaries and benefits in Missouri; in-person professional development programs on topics including, Beginning Teacher Assistance, School Finance, Mentor Training, Classroom Management and Preventing School Violence. Many of these programs were also made available as distance or virtual programs. Nearly 1,000 educators participated in the various onsite and online professional development options provided by MSTA. In addition, MSTA staff responded to thousands of inquiries from individual teachers by telephone, email and with in-person meetings.
  • Education Media: MSTA is a trusted source of professional information for teachers, covering topics such as classroom management, working with parents, educational technology, testing, and more. To this end, MSTA published education-related information and research, as well as updates on current issues of interest and concern to Missouri teachers and other education personnel. Communication and marketing strategies include an online magazine and email newsletters; a comprehensive, informative website; social media posts; media outreach; blogs; podcasts; video; and direct mail. Specific accomplishments with online media include maintaining a 50%60% open rate across all online publications. In addition, MSTA publishes a weekly legislative e-newsletter, MSTA Action, with a 60%-70% open rate. MSTA also offers members-only legislative podcasts and video productions that provide insight into current legislative initiatives and a glimpse into weekly Capitol activity. Finally, MSTA provides Tillie to its members. Tillie is an online AI agent that provides members with information about the association and its work product, including detailed lesson plans, classroom rubrics, and information on school district policies and procedures.
  • Education Policy: MSTA's education policy program advances and protects the interests of educators, students, and Missouri's public schools by working to shape sound education policy. MSTA's grassroots advocacy gives educators a unified voice in Jefferson City, ensuring that the concerns and expertise of Missouri educators are represented in legislative and regulatory processes. The department delivers testimony on MSTA's legislative platform, represents members' interests at Public School Retirement System and State Board of Education meetings, serves as a liaison to governmental agencies, and conducts workshops on political issues and involvement. MSTA's advocacy is nonpartisan and member-driven, with policy priorities set through a democratic process at the annual Assembly of Delegates. Through this member-driven and democratic approach, MSTA ensures that its actions and initiatives closely mirror the aspirations and challenges faced by educators, strengthening public education across Missouri.
  • Conferences & Events: MSTA provided several conferences and events for prospective teachers, beginning teachers, and experienced teachers that promoted the interests of the teaching profession and provided practical input and resources designed to improve the skills of individual teachers. The most significant of these events is the annual convention attended by about 500 educators. This two-day event features more than approximately 25 separate workshops addressing a range of instructional topics; a keynote address by a well-known education speaker; an exhibit hall with more than 30 vendors of instructional and education interest; and general discussion of education policy issues at the annual membership meeting. Other events include an annual meeting of the student group with over 100 participants and an annual leadership conference serving nearly 400 educators. MSTA's conferences and events provide a valuable opportunity for practicing teachers in Missouri to network with other professionals, learn from experts in the field and share ideas and techniques across broad geographic areas.
