Mission
Mission - The California Oncology Research Institute is committed to curing cancer through educating communities, ensuring access to early detection screenings and fostering innovative research and treatments. We care about establishing relationships within Los Angeles' underserved neighborhoods to provide information about several types of cancers.
Program accomplishments
- Three Main Goals:a) Cancer Researchb) Outreach and Education c) Artificial Intelligence (AI)and d) Legacy planningExpansion of Clinical Research: The CORI doctors have the expertise, track record, and enthusiasm to continue the excellence in clinical research through federal- and industry-funded clinical trials. However, an expanded infrastructure is necessary to maintain this effort and allow for CORI to meet its outstanding potential. The expansion requires additional personnel to facilitate industry trial identification, development and negotiation of trial budgets and contracts, assistance in establishing and documenting protocols. Investment in the clinical infrastructure in the near future would allow expansion of the program. Trainees and Researchers: CORI has supported the research of leading clinicians, young researchers and educators leading to national presentations and publications in peer-review journals. All publications have and will continue to acknowledge CORI as a source of funding.Expanding Community Outreach Activities and Educational Programs: CORI intends to offer at least three cancer educational workshops and cancer screening programs to underserved communities including inner city churches throughout the greater Los Angeles area, expand the cancer screening program to include prostate and colorectal screenings, build new partnerships with other cancer awareness and/or similar cancer organizations and increase our cancer educational literature that is offered at each cancer workshop.Strategic Alliances: Given the significant financial constraints of government funded research in the areas of clinical trials, genomic sequencing and other areas of clinical and translational research, as well as to sustain the support of trainees, strong strategic partners are needed. There may be opportunities to expand existing alliances by strengthening relationships with strategic collaborators and philanthropic organizations. These include major universities in the US and Israel as well as respected foundations such as Stand up to Cancer, the American Cancer Society, Providence Health System and Cancer Support Community.Artificial Intelligence (AI) personalize cancer care (see details below)Legacy Planning: Establish legacy planning as part of its philanthropyTranslational Lab Research: Colorectal Progress Report Perform translational multi-omics on colorectal cancer (CRC) research in early onset (EOCRC) versus late onset (LOCRC) patients to better understand the cause of EOCRC and identify potential targets for treatment.Epidemiology of Early-onset colorectal cancer(EOCRC)The incidence of early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC), defined as diagnosis before the age of 50, is on the rise globally, in contrast to the decreasing trend in late-onset colorectal cancer (LOCRC). Since the 1990s, the incidence of EOCRC has increased by2% annually, particularly in Western countries such as North America and Western Europe. While the exact causes remain unknown, environmental demographic factors such as dietary changes, obesity, lack of physical activity, and antibiotic use are thought to play a role. EOCRC patients are also often diagnosed at advanced clinical stages (III or IV) because they are not typically targeted for routine screening, and their symptoms can be mistaken for other colon related benign conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome. The prognosis for EOCRC is poorer than for LOCRC at the same stage, due to the more aggressive biological nature of these tumors. The purpose of this study is to elucidate potential molecular pathogenic mechanisms of EOCRC which may lead to earlier diagnosis and potential targets for therapy.Expenses $320,700 · grants $200,532
