Mission

Friends Peace Teams is a Spirit-led organization working around the world to develop long-term relationships with communities in conflict to create programs for peace building, healing & reconciliation based on extensive Quaker experience.

Program accomplishments

  • African Great Lakes-Now more than ever, it is essential to celebrate and amplify the diverse voices that shape the region's identity and future. Technology is playing an increasingly important role in democratizing expression throughout the Great Lakes. Resilience and Reconciliation...Though historically marked by colonialism, conflict and displacement the Great Lakes has also witnessed powerful movements of reconciliation and renewal. Community leaders, artists, youth and faith-based organizations have worked tirelessly to mend divides and promote healing. Initiatives like Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) and Children's Peace Libraries in Rwanda and Burundi empower individuals, especially youth to resolve conflicts peacefully and build a culture of nonviolence. In many parts of the region voices of women, young people, persons with disabilities and other marginalized groups are often unheard. Yet sustainable peace and development require that these voices be acknowledged and elevated. Women and youth are driving transformative change. Through spoken word, civic engagement, digital storytelling and entrepreneurship they are challenging societal norms and fostering inclusion. We continue to implement programs promoting peace, justice and equitable education across the region. We raise awareness on human dignity, nonviolence and respect for diversity.

  • Europe and the Middle East-FPT works in extremely challenging areas of conflict and division to help alleviate oppression, prejudice and human suffering. Circles of support provide respite and hope for those experiencing trauma, while the sharing of practical tools for justice and peace helps to focus minds on nonviolence and change, enabling us to discern that Peace is Possible. In July 2025, Friends Peace Teams Europe and Middle East brought together 24 peacebuilders from Palestine, Chechnya, Iraq, Ukraine, Democratic Republic of Congo, the UK, the US and Ireland for a regional gathering and workshop on Cultures of Justice and Peace and Alternative to Violence Project special thematic series for peacebuilders and activists. Eight days of activities brought us together step by step as we progressed through the workshop's roadmap to justice and peace. Together we experienced personal and social transformation as we learned about ourselves and each other, finding common ground in four languages across eight cultures. With great Diversity of Voices, we listened to each other's experience of conflict, and we learned deeper empathy and understanding of nonviolence. The team support Ukrainian survivors by relieving psychological trauma among people in western Ukraine, many displaced by attacks in the east. They counsel groups and individuals and train professionals.

  • Peacebuilding in Las Americas PLA) works in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Colombia, Ecuador and now Cuba. The communities where we work experience poverty, domestic violence, inequality, unemployment, exacerbated by returning deportees, police violence, oppression from government forces and entities, gang violence and destruction of ecosystems. In Guatemala we are working to transform communities by positively impacting families, adolescents and children. Our work is crucial in a country facing high rates of violence and inequality. We mini AVP workshops for low-income families. Participants learn to identify violence and improve their communication skills; many women find support for domestic violence a widespread problem in the country. We offer workshops to students ages 12-17 providing them with essential tools such as self-affirmation, respect for themselves and others, analytical thinking and nonviolent conflict resolution, instilling the concept of Transforming Power or as we say in Latin America, the Power that Transforms. Our Power of Goodness program is foundational for children. Through mini workshops children ages 4-11 discover their innate goodness and the importance of kindness. In El Salvador we base and carry out our work by serving various vulnerable groups affected by different forms of violence. Children, adolescents, youth, women, people with disabilities, older adults, survivors of the civil war, community leaders, church leaders from various faith traditions, and individuals in recovery from violence and addiction have all participated in our AVP and Power of Goodness workshops. Through these experiences, they have strengthened their lives, self-esteem, spirituality and self-awareness, while also discovering and developing their nonviolent capacities in the pursuit of peace within their communities. Honduras is a country in agony in the midst of violence. The AVP program offers people a chance to choose nonviolence. Step by step, with perseverance, AVP in Honduras is gaining recognition. Men and women who are incarcerated, teachers and students, children and adults in churches who have participated in the basic and advanced workshops, the trauma resilience workshop and the facilitator training, see AVP as a fruitful and more humane way of life. Cuba- In 2023, a collective dram began to take shape to revitalize AVP on the island. A small courageous group PAVistas (AVPers) along with the supportive solidarity of international facilitators, rekindled this flame of peace and transformation. Today, in 2025, they joyfully celebrate the fruits of so much shared effort. They have a strengthened team of around 10 new facilitators ready to sow VP in every corner of Cuba. Their energy and commitment are our greatest strength. In southwestern Colombia, there are many hotbeds of violence and more AVP facilitators are needed as we only have 3 who are currently active. For this reason, we are conducting workshops to create the process of training apprentice facilitators, who will add to our current team, allowing AVP to reach new places, hence the importance of their contributions to the mission of becoming peacemakers.

  • TRR: The goal of Toward Right Relationship with Native Peoples is to build relationships among Native & non-Native communities based on truth, respect, justice & our share humanity. The Toward Right Relationship with Native Peoples program supports Indigenous Water Protectors who are literally standing in the way of oil & gas pipelines, dams & destructive mining. TRR raises awareness of the ongoing harms to Native people from 150 years of family separation as churches and the federal government forced Native children to attend boarding schools. They provide spaces for settler families to acknowledge how they have unjustly benefited from the theft of Native land and to consider paths toward justice. Power of Goodness expands the PoG story and children's artwork collection and offers PoG/AVP mini-workshops for religious education or community events. We are also learning together about the role 19th century Quakers played in the forced assimilation of Native children by operating Indian boarding schools. TRR coordinates the Quakers and Indian Boarding Schools' Research Network (QIBS) and collaborates with Native American organizations to provide information to Native families who ask, "What happened to our children?"
