Electronic signatures

Reviewed

When an e-filed return needs a signature, the IRS uses a declaration form. For the Form 990-EZ and Form 8868 it is Form 8453-TE. An officer of the organization signs it to declare that the return is true, correct and complete and to authorize its electronic filing. California Form 199 is signed on Form 8453-EO. A Form 990-N on its own needs no signature.

How it works in 990.tax

  • The form is filled in from your return: organization, EIN, tax period and the officer named on the return.
  • It opens in a Dropbox Sign window inside 990.tax. Dropbox Sign is an electronic signature service.
  • The officer draws, types or uploads a signature.
  • The signed form is sent to the IRS with the return.

Sign only if you are an officer authorized to sign for the organization, and only after checking the return. The Review and Submit page shows a PDF of the return before you sign.

Step by step: Sign Form 8453 online.

Questions

Can I type my signature instead of drawing it?

Yes. The Dropbox Sign window lets the officer draw, type or upload a signature. Whichever you choose, the signed form goes to the IRS with the return.
