When is my return due?
Reviewed
Form 990-N and Form 990-EZ are due by the 15th day of the 5th month after your tax year ends.
| Your tax year ends | Due | |---|---| | December 31 | May 15 | | March 31 | August 15 | | June 30 | November 15 | | September 30 | February 15 |
If the due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, it moves to the next business day.
Our due date calculator works this out for any year end, including the weekend and holiday adjustment and the extended date.
Need more time?
A Form 990-EZ can be extended by six months with Form 8868, filed by the original due date. A Form 990-N cannot be extended. It has no late penalty, but missing it three years in a row costs the exemption; see Missed years and automatic revocation.
You can only file after the tax year has ended.
Questions
Our year ends June 30. When is our return due?
November 15: the 15th day of the 5th month after June 30. If November 15 is a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, it moves to the next business day.
Can I file before the year is over?
No. The IRS does not accept a 990-N until the tax year has ended, and a 990-EZ reports the whole year.
