We provide grants to Twegashe Integral Development (TID), a Tanzanian NGO, whose current major program is to construct and operate Twegashe Primary School in Bushasha Village, Tanzania. In January 2025, we welcomed 30 pre-kindergartners to Twegashe, bringing current enrolment to 208 students in grades pre-K through grade 5. In 2025, CORE continued construction of staff housing, having completed construction of all the school buildings in 2024. School facilities now include seven classrooms, cafeteria, kitchen, library, administrative offices, staffroom, and eight staff duplexes. CORE also continues to fund school operations and to build a scholarship reserve for Twegashe graduates. CORE is committed to high quality education. Our school program emphasizes community engagement, strong academics, and a focus on the whole child. Classroom instruction is in English so students will be successful in secondary school. We provide a nutritious breakfast and lunch for children, with fruits and vegetables from our school garden. We are committed to environmental sustainability. Michael Banobi, CORE Board President, is also board chairman of TID, which allows him to monitor the use of these funds. In addition, TID financials are audited by an external audit firm and reviewed by the CORE board of directors. Michael spent nine months in Bushasha Village in 2025. He has been overseeing TID finances since the project began. There is a provision for other TID board members to oversee funds, if necessary, with a requirement that two members sign on all bank withdrawals. CORE will not provide additional funding until a detailed report on previous grants has been received and approved by CORE Tanzania's board of directors to ensure that all funds granted are used for the intended purpose. Form 990, Part III, Line 4a (Program service accomplishments continued) The school buildings and teacher homes are powered by solar energy, we use composting toilets, and we garden organically. Bushasha Village community engagement is high, with over 200 volunteers in 2025! In addition, there were 34 U.S. volunteers, including Michael Banobi and Jeannette Banobi, who spent more than eight months in the village volunteering and overseeing the entire project. U.S. volunteers also included 11 students from Lakeside School in Seattle who spent three weeks leading camp activities for Twegashe students through Lakeside's Global Service Learning Program. CORE's financial commitment to TID includes ensuring that CORE has enough in reserves to fully fund school operations for the current and following school year. Copies of the Form 990 are also provided to the full board before the 990 is filed with the IRS. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12c The organization requires each new board member to review and sign the conflict of interest policy. Annually, all board members complete a disclosure form identifying relationships, positions, or circumstances that the members believe could contribute to a conflict of interest or the appearance of a conflict of interest. Forms noting a possible conflict are reviewed by the executive committee of the board to determine a course of action. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15 The organization is 100% volunteer-run. No officers, directors, or key employees received compensation during the tax year. The President underwent a performance evaluation by the Board to ensure organizational goals were met, but this was a voluntary, uncompensated position. Form 990, Part XII, Line 2b The financial statements of CORE are not audited by a U.S. firm. However, there is independent audit oversight of the grants that CORE gives to Twegashe Integral Development (TID). TID is the Tanzanian NGO that operates Twegashe Primary School. The annual financial statements of TID are audited by an independent accounting firm.
