<PrimaryExemptPurposeTxt>PlantAmnesty's mission is to provide education, resources and advocacy to prevent mal-pruning and preserve urban greenspace. For nearly forty years, PlantAmnesty has been educating the general public and horticultural professionals on industry standard pruning of trees and shrubs to maintain the health of the urban landscape. The care and treatment of our urban forest has taken on high priority in the struggle against climate change as we rely on the carbon offset from older trees and plantings to clean our air and reduce temperatures. PlantAmnestys dynamic and professional classes, workshops and public events are cutting edge in this fight. We partner with the University of Washington Center for Urban Horticulture, WWU Master Gardeners, Bellevue Botanical Gardens, Edmonds College Horticultural Program and many local garden clubs and professional arborists to bring the message of care to the community at large. <DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>Creating Public Awareness of the Issues: PlantAmnesty uses any and all avenues to bring awareness of proper plant pruning to the general public. Boothing events provide PlantAmnesty with the one-on-one opportunity to reach new demographics in a festive setting and included The NW Flower and Garden Show five-day event along with Lake Forest Parke Green Fair, Redmonds Green Elephant Plant Swap, Alzheimers Caregiver Summit at Emerald Downs, Rainier Farm Fest at Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands, NEST Senior Fair at Magnuson Park, Bellevue Botanic Gardens Plant Sale, Ballard P-Patch Art Walk, and Shark Garden. The distribution of free literature (in English and Spanish) and hands on demonstrations help PA deliver its message. For the second year in a row, PA teamed up with the King County Master Gardeners program to teach pruning to Master Gardeners with a hands-on workshop at Highline Botanical Gardens in SeaTac. Public outreach included Arbor Day which saw teams of PlantAmnestys Referral Service professional arborists voluntarily working on trees and plantings on the Ryther campus for children with behavior challenges. PlantAmnestys Speakers Bureau provided expert Speakers to Garden Clubs, Societies and other horticultural agencies to explain the organizations mission and provide pruning education; for 2025 these included garden clubs in Indianola, Everett, Mercer Island, Tacoma, Edmonds, Enumclaw as well as Scriber Lake High School and Edmonds Community College. PlantAmnesty hosted five Meetings of Like Minds for members and the public covering topics as diverse as Fungi & Trees by Andrea Starbird, author Lynda Mapes discussing her new book The Trees Are Speaking, and Linda Hornbergs Picture a Garden. <DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>Education/Solutions to the Problem: Education and outreach is a key component of PlantAmnestys mission and its premiere program is the Master Pruner certification series. Each year PA provides professional ISA certified classes and workshops for both those working in the field and individual gardeners/homeowners. The year-long program consisting of fourteen classes and three workshops required to earn Master Pruner certification are taught by professional horticulturists. In 2025 PA returned to the live, in-person classes with all the inherent advantages of group interaction. Class topics include fruit tree pruning from apples to cherries, all levels of tree care from 80 Douglas Firs to 8 Dogwoods, pruning for the health of major shrubs such as Rhododendrons and Azaleas, renovation of cane growing roses and Forsythia and so much more. The program is repeated in summer and winter in a six-week/twelve classes condensed course for professionals through PlantAmnestys partnership with the University of Washingtons Center for Urban Horticulture. The three required hands-on workshops are conducted in the field with professional instructors and volunteers working alongside students on public or private property sites. The Master Pruner classes are open to the public and can be taken for certification by horticultural professionals or as individual classes serving those who just want to know how to prune their Magnolia tree. 2025 saw PA graduate eighteen new Master Pruners, teach 460 students attending 24 lectures and 214 participants in at least three of the twelve workshops offered. Seventy-four volunteer instructors were assisted by 50 volunteers who donated more than 202 hours to the series to ensure each student received one-on-one instruction. PA also added a roster of smaller hands-on workshops at sites with specialty one-topic experiences such as Wisteria pruning at Magnuson Park, Heronswood hedge pruning, and professional pruning at the Carl English Garden at the Ballard Locks. The Cass Turnbull Scholarship program tapped five more recipients who were subsidized to complete the entire MP series and PA provided more than $6800.00 worth of discounted classes and memberships to those in need. Education also comes from PlantAmnestys website which fielded more than 21,562 hits as people sought information from the organizations library of 30 years of educational articles on topics ranging from technical pruning to plant renovation. PAs YouTube Pruning videos (in English and Spanish) covering everything from the basics to the complicated in pruning continue to be heavily viewed with 260,064 hits. Our social media platform contacts topped 160,000 discussing topics ranging from individual gardening issues to appreciation for pruning and other plant information shared by the organization.PlantAmnestys Referral Service is comprised of 40 vetted, professional arborists and gardeners available for hire by the general public who want the knowledge and expertise these professionals provide, often to correct problems created by commercial gardening services. Acting as liaison between the need and the answer. PA fielded 1581 calls for this service in King, Pierce, Snohomish and Kitsap counties.More than 891 members support PA and receive discounted prices on classes and invitations to Special Events as well as quarterly newsletters featuring pruning articles from industry leaders. Members can also take advantage of PAs Adopt-a-Plant program that connects people who want to re-purpose their shrubs and small trees to others who willingly take them. 71 plants found new homes in 2025.Directly Served: 3,150 Indirectly Served: 300,000</DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>

<DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>Engender Respect for Plants and their Diversity: This aspect of the PA may seem superfluous but is actually essential in changing the publics viewpoint of how plants and trees impact our environment and aid against climate change. As long as humans view trees and plants as incidental, the ecosystem is at risk. PAs work in this area includes: The Cass Turnbull Garden is a long-term program of PA begun in 2018 after the death of founder Cass Turnbull. The property was donated by the philanthropic Bullitt Family to the City of Seattle and PA has worked with Seattle Parks and Recreation to continue to build an urban oasis of ADA accessible paths, public art and overlooks with more than 300 donated plantings. 350 volunteers have donated over 17,000 hours of their time and expertise to the creation of the garden. For 2025 under conditions dictated by Seattle Parks and Recreation, volunteerscontributed 765 hours weeding, raking, mulching, watering and pruning regularly in the garden and selected areas of the 1.75-acre property. A recent new agreement with Seattle Parks and Recreation granted the CTG permission to design and develop an additional corner of the property with space for future classes and community events to be included in the design. Fund the Last 6000 campaign is an effort to find, document and protect Seattle's remaining majestic trees. The name of the campaign comes from the 2016 Seattle Tree Canopy Cover report, which noted that there were only 6,338 trees of trunk diameter of 30 inches and greater left in the city. The campaign officially launched on April 1, 2019, and due to popular demand, continues to accept information on majestic trees. The focus currently is to analyze and report the key points of our census findings to community groups and create neighborhood documentation of the majestic trees. The program has been active in supporting the Garry Oaks Conservancy, as well as working with the City of Seattle on its new tree ordinance and land use policies. In 2025 FTL6K manned tables at community events, posted on Instagram and, finally, the relevant trees have been digitally mapped and connected to the link on the website.A popular PA program of Plant Walks featuring professionals in the field identifying and discussing characteristics of trees in the urban forest for members and the general public. These Walks offer both exercise and tree identification as well as detailed tree information in a casual setting. Featured 2025 walks: Don Brooks and Cisco Morries in their private gardens, Sue Nicol at The Schmitz Preserve Park and Van Bobbit at Ravenna Park. Yard Make-Overs bring crews of volunteer pruners into homeowner settings to renovate and renew overgrown and overwhelmed yards. One of these labor intensive events in 2025 brought the talents of more than 13 volunteers together for the benefit of the homeowner and PlantAmnesty. The Seattle Heritage Tree Program nominates outstanding trees in the greater Seattle area for conservation and preservation. This Committee is comprised of PA arborists often working in conjunction with homeowners upon whose property the trees grow. The Committee nominates the trees and works in coordination with the City of Seattle to map the tree for public access and awareness. Homeowners receive a plaque for their tree. There are currently more than 250 heritage trees in Seattle. PlantAmnesty won a contract with the City of Redmond to train recipients of their citywide tree giveaway, including a series of webinars, hands-on workshops and tree walks.Conservation Easements have been an on-going behind the scenes project for PlantAmnesty spurred on by inquiries from homeowners expressing an equally strong interest. Finally, in 2025, in partnership with Birds Connect Seattle and Fund the Last 6000, research and outlines for a conservation easement program were created. This culminated in an Executive Order by then mayor Bruce Harrel to work with PA on a city sponsored tree conservation program. For many years PlantAmnesty and the University of Washington Botanic Gardens partnered to deliver the Urban Forest Symposium, an annual event for the horticultural community. That program was given to local tribal elders in 2023. PlantAmnesty and UWBG have since developed a new symposium: Futures in Applied Arboriculture. This specialty one-day conference focuses on timely topics to bring together a diverse audience including arborists, land managers, policymakers, designers, program managers, municipal planners, volunteers, students and advocates. The 2025 symposiums theme revolved around climate change and tree selection, pest and disease evolution and treatment, and the changing impacts of tree work on urban wildlife and habitat. The priority was on practical, on the ground (or out on the limb) information and techniques with immediately implementable guidance.PlantAmnestys Special Events for 2025:PlantAmnesty Bingo again featured Seattles favorite gardener, Cisco Morris, for an evening of fun, chili and plants donated from more than 25 Puget Sound area nurseries and gardeners. Besides being entertaining, participants benefited from Ciscoes extensive knowledge of each plant prize.
