Kaiyan Mao was employed with Mitre Corporation at the time of her death. Mitre worked with SCNV to determine the criteria to award high school seniors with a monetary gift that helps to offset college expenses and support these athletes in pursuing skating during college. 1 Collegiate Scholarship awarded to six (6) members each of whom is a high school senior. The awardees completed the application, which was reviewed by an independent committee. The Committee presented their proposal to the SCNV Governing Board for vote. Each applicant selected for an award received between $500 - $1,200 for a total of $4,200. The Edward Zhou Memorial Fund was established fiscal year 2025. Mitre Corporation donated $5,000 in memory of the Zhou family who perished on American Airlines Flight 5342. Mitre awarded two high school senior graduates each $500, totalling $1,000. 6 5200 0 Competitor Award: Qualifying Advancement. Two (2) recipients were awarded a grant of $750 each for a total of $1,500 to assist in travel expenses incurred to participate in qualifying competitions. These awardees participated in Sectionals. 2 1500 0 Schedule I, Part I, Line 2 Competitor Grants: The organization provides assistance to members who advance to qualifying levels of figure skating. Assistance is provided to off-set expenses incurred for travel, such as lodging and transportation. Annually, at the start of the season, before any individual competes to qualify, the Board votes during an open monthly meeting to set the dollar value for each type of qualifying level (i.e., Sectionals, Nationals, International). Collegiate Grants: The organization provides annual awards to members who are graduating high school seniors and who are attending a 4-year or 2-year college or University. The qualifications to apply as well as the rubric for award is posted on the organization web site throughout the year as well as detailed in a weekly email starting four months before applications are due. Applicants are given four months to complete the application. A committee whose composition is detailed in the organization policy papers, is selected to review the applications against the rubric and provide a recommendation to the Board to vote. Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 6 SCNV is membership based with approximately 380 members who pay annual dues. Half of the dues is paid to US Figure Skating (USFS) in Colorado Springs, CO, which makes our members also a member of USFS. USFS membership is required to test to advance in figure skating and to compete in USFS-sanctioned events. The other half of organizational dues provides benefits to members, such as community events, competitions, educational programs, and other special events. Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7a Annually, members 18 years and older are asked to vote on a slate of candidates to the Board. Board members serve a 3-year term. Therefore, each year, a minimum of three (3) Board members are up for re-election. The slate of candidates are presented to membership 45 days in advance of voting. Voting requres 10% of adult membership and occurs during the organization's annual meeting. The voting occurs hybrid both in person and over Zoom.
