<Desc>During the reporting period, the program achieved several significant milestones that strengthened community engagement, cultural preservation, and resilience planning throughout the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor.A major accomplishment was the delivery of a three-part educational series in Florida focused on the history and living legacy of the Gullah Geechee people. The series provided participants with a deeper understanding of Gullah Geechee heritage, cultural traditions, and contemporary contributions, fostering greater awareness and appreciation among community members and stakeholders.Building upon this momentum, the organization successfully launched its inaugural Gullah Geechee Summit in Florida. The Summit brought together community leaders, cultural practitioners, scholars, preservation advocates, and residents to engage in meaningful dialogue around cultural preservation, economic opportunity, and community development. The success of this event has led to plans for expansion into additional Corridor states in 2026, creating new opportunities for regional collaboration and impact. The program also conducted Gullah Geechee Resilience and Resource Listening Tours across the Corridor. These community-centered engagements provided valuable opportunities for residents to share local knowledge, identify environmental and habitat restoration priorities, and discuss challenges affecting their communities. Information gathered during the tours is being used to guide the development of a comprehensive Resilience Plan designed to strengthen community sustainability, environmental stewardship, and long-term cultural preservation.Another highlight was the hosting of the first annual Gullah Convening, a landmark celebration of Gullah Geechee culture, heritage, and community. The event featured a formal dinner curated by renowned Gullah chefs, showcasing the rich culinary traditions of the Gullah Geechee people. Guests also enjoyed live music, cultural storytelling, and opportunities for intergenerational connection and learning. The Convening created an unforgettable evening that honored heritage, celebrated cultural excellence, and reinforced the importance of preserving and sharing Gullah Geechee traditions for future generations.Collectively, these initiatives expanded public awareness of Gullah Geechee culture, strengthened community connections across the Corridor, elevated local voices in resilience planning efforts, and established a strong foundation for continued growth and impact in the years ahead.</Desc>

<ExplanationTxt>The Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor (The Corridor) ensures that mini-grant funds are used responsibly, transparently, and in accordance with approved project goals while minimizing administrative burden for community-based partners. Monitoring activities promote accountability while strengthening partnerships and supporting successful project outcomes. The six grant monitoring procedures include: establishing clear expectations; conducting pre- and post-check-ins; addressing issues promptly; requiring performance and financial reports; reviewing supporting documentation; and grant close out. 1. Establish Clear Expectations: The Corridor executes a signed grant agreement before funds are disbursed which clearly defines the approved scope of work, budget, project timeline, and reporting requirements, identifies allowable use of funds and match requirements, and provides partners with guidance on required documentation and recordkeeping. 2. Conduct Pre- and Post-Check-Ins: The Corridor schedules pre-and post-check ins to discuss project requirements, progress, successes, challenges, and technical assistance needs. All communications are documented and recorded via online recording software. 3. Address Issues Promptly: If concerns arise, grantees are required to communicate findings promptly and in writing. The Corridor works with grantees to develop a corrective action plan with reasonable deadlines when necessary and documents all follow-up actions. 4. Require Performance and Financial Reports: Community-based partners must submit reports that include: progress toward final project objectives and deliverables; activities completed during the reporting period; budget expenditures compared to the approved budget; proof of meeting match requirements; any requested budget modifications or project changes; and photographs, event materials, or other evidence of project accomplishments. 5. Reviewing Supporting Documentation: The Corridor requires documentation that reasonably supports grant expenditures, such as: proof of match requirements through volunteer timesheets, documented value of donated goods or services, and documentation of in-kind support. Attendance records for funded events are also requested (when appropriate). Monitoring is conducted through a four-eyes principle that requires both the Grants Manager and the Finance Manager to ensure accountability, transparency, information integrity, and compliance. 6. Close Out the Grant: Before closing the grant, The Corridor verifies that: all required reports have been submitted, grant funds were spent according to the approved budget, deliverables have been completed, required financial documentation has been received; and any remaining funds have been addressed according to grant requirements.</ExplanationTxt>

<ExplanationTxt>Attachment to Form 990 Pursuant to Treas. Reg. 301.6652-1(f)Organization: Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission, Inc.Tax Period: October 1, 2024 September 30, 2025Return: Form 990Original Due Date: February 17, 2026Date Filed: August 5, 2026Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission, Inc. (the Organization") respectfully requests abatement of the penalty assessed under Internal Revenue Code Section 6652(c) for the late filing of its Form 990 for the tax year ended September 30, 2025, based on reasonable cause. The Organization engaged a qualified tax return preparer to prepare and timely file its Form 990 for the period in question. Prior to the original due date, the Organization provided its financial records and supporting documentation to its preparer with the intention of either filing the return timely or requesting an automatic extension via Form 8868. However, the preparer's firm was in the process of converting its tax preparation software system at that time, which disrupted the firm's ability to process and e-file returns and extension requests. As a direct result of this conversion, the preparer was unable to e-file Form 8868 on the Organization's behalf before the original due date, and the extension was never submitted. The Organization was unaware, until after the due date had passed, that the extension had not been filed. The Organization had acted with ordinary business care and prudence by timely furnishing its records to its preparer and reasonably relying on that preparer, a professional retained specifically for this purpose, to meet the applicable filing deadlines. The failure to timely file was due to circumstances outside the Organization's control and was not the result of willful neglect. This is the first instance in which the Organization has filed a Form 990 late. The Organization has otherwise maintained a consistent record of timely compliance with its federal filing obligations. To prevent a recurrence of this issue, the Organization has implemented a practice of independently confirming with its preparer, in writing, that its annual return or a valid extension has been timely and successfully filed each year, rather than relying solely on the preparer's internal processes. For these reasons, the Organization respectfully requests that the late-filing penalty be abated for reasonable cause.Under penalties of perjury, I declare that I have examined this statement, and to the best of my knowledge and belief, it is true, correct, and complete.Djuanna BrockingtonExecutive Director</ExplanationTxt>
