August 21st is National Fentanyl Awareness Day. While overdose deaths slightly declined in 2024, the threat of Fentanyl looms large, especially in border states like California. MESA Foundation partnered in a campaign with the SD Attorney Generals office to film and distribute a PSA regarding #BlockFentanyl and #KnowAboutNarcan. The 2023 video was shared over Instagram, X (formally Twitter), Snapchat, LinkedIn and UTube by MESA student-athletes, the US Dept. of Justice and other coalition members. We had coaches from other schools in the nation calling us to inquire about how they can go about filming the same message for their communities. In 2024 the DOJ took a different approach directly with the womens soccer team at SDSU but has circled back to MESA to create a larger-scale campaign to launch Q3 of 2025. We have been working on a huge project that will include the Greek Organizations to educate about the drug crisis thats plaguing our nation.Intertribal Youth Basketball Clinic at Pechanga Sports Arena: Tribal youth groups from several parts of Southern California traveled to attend this no-cost popular basketball skills clinic at Pechanga Sports arena. T-shirts, autographed items, prizes, meet and greets, snacks, basketball skills and interactive games were enjoyed by all that attended. The COA of Sycuan asked us to host again next season due to its popularity and positive feedback from the tribal community.Challenged Athletes Foundation: MESA hosted a wheelchair basketball camp on Campus at the JAM center. This camp aimed at connecting able bodied college-athletes to those in wheelchairs. Challenged Athletes Foundation and SDSU Adapted Athletics encouraged their athletes to sign up. The camp filled quickly and was a huge success. The co-ed camp was offered free of charge to children and adults. Unique T-shirts, autographed items, prizes, a meet and greet, basketball skills and interactive games were enjoyed by all that attended. SDSU BB team members had a chance to play a game in wheelchairs provided by CAF to give them a greater appreciation of the challenges those with adaptive needs face in sports. The camp concluded with a catered lunch and ice cream by the scoop. Due to its popularity, we will be hosting this camp again.2024 Vote campaign: Being an election year, MESA Foundation focused efforts on overcoming political challenges for students through education. MESA Student-Athletes, edited, recorded and posted social media content on Instagram and X to further political awareness among students. VOTE T-shirts were printed and circulated to encourage additional involvement. Our message was delivered in a neutral manner. Strongly focused on ways to educate where to vote and encourage conversation amongst college students regardless of individual political beliefs.Blood Drive: MESA partnered with San Diego Blood Bank. This years campaign was led by utilizing a unique partnership with SeaWorld San Diegos Hall-O-Scream team. Video content and social media posts were created for various social media platforms featuring a zombie and a fortune teller. The message was not to be afraid to give blood & helping people by giving blood is not scary. These posts were shared through email blasts and other means of digital marketing by San Deigo Blood bank. MESA Student- Athletes spent several hours prepping to film this event. They followed up by posting on their social media platforms Instagram and X to make meaningful impacts. The blood drive resulted in first time donors as well as returning ones.A Walk for ALS: MESA partnered with ALS to help raise awareness to the goal of raising $250k to help find treatments for the disease. SDSU Basketball Coach Mark Fisher is currently fighting ALS so this event hits particularly close to home. Team Fisher T-shirts and refreshments were provided. MESA student-athletes prepped for this event by walking in support the day of and posting on their social media platforms Instagram and X to make meaningful impacts in the weeks leading up to the walk. Collective fundraising efforts raised over $320k dollars. Crushing Greater San Diego branch ALSs initial fundraising goals.Fighting Food Insecurity: MESA Foundation partnered with the San Diego Foodbank and Feeding San Diego to amplify the need to bring additional awareness. 1 in 4 people in San Diego are experiencing food insecurity. Elderly and children included. In November and December MESA student-athletes spent their time at two different food distribution sites and leveraged their platforms to make meaningful impacts for over 500 local lives. San Diego food Bank is government subsidized. Feeding San Diego is a food panty that specializes in food recuse. They do not rely on government grants. They operate oncommunity needs via private donations and partnerships. Rather than let the food spoil, Feeding San Diegos network captures and redistributes perishable food before it does to waste. Also important to note that MESA Student-Athletes elected to pledge a portion of their individual NIL money as a team to present a grant to Feeding San Diego to offset the funds needed. MESA Foundation matched that amount to make an even greater impact.MESA Community Engagement 2024Fan Festivals and Celebrations with Local Businesses and Community Support Aug 20 -Del Mar FanFest @ the Del Mar Racetrack Aug 20- NOVO Brewing 10-year anniversary celebration appearance and fan engagement.
