On March 17 2025 the Trust filed Form 1023 seeking retroactive reinstatement with a lengthy reasonable cause statement. As part of the application process for reinstatement.past due returns for 2019 2020 2021 2022 and 2023 were filed on March 1,2025. As required by the IRS these returns were filed in paper form. The Trust then attempted to file form 990 - N via Tax990 but this was rejected on the grounds that the tax exempt status of the Trust was revoked. Based on this rejection the Trust then attempted to file a paper return Form 990 - EZ which was mailed to the IRS in paper form on May 7 2025. This was received by the IRS on May 16 2025 but according to the tracking information from the post office it was received much earlier. Based upon the requirement that the Trust file paper returns for 2019 through 2023.which were accepted. the Trust reasonably believed that it was required to file a paper return for 2024. The tax exempt status of theTrust was actually reinstated by letter dated May 1 2025 received on May 27 2025 with retroactive reinstatement to May 15 2022. However as part of that reinstatement the Trust was informed that its status was changed from a public charity to a private foundation. The reinstatement letter advised that the Trust was now required to file Form 990-PF. However the Trust reasonably assumed that after receiveding its reinstatement that it had satisfied its requirements for filing for the year 2024 based upon the filing of form 990 EZ in May 2025. This is a small organizationits contributions for 2024 totaled $30,100 with expenses for the year of $34,214 run by unpaid volunteers and it reasonably assumed that it had complied with all filing requirements up until the time it received notice from the IRS rejecting its paper Form 990 - EZ. The letter from the IRS is dated June 17 2025 but was not physically received until July 5 2025. The Trust believes that it has done everything in itspower to comply with directives from the IRS and that no prejudice will result from now electronically filing Form 990 - PF .
