But they can be expensive. CalBike works to educate the public on the role that e-bikes can play in replacing car trips while also providing other important benefits such as health, economy, and safety. CalBikes work supports that as a climate solution, e-bike subsidies are more valuable than e-car subsidies. CalBike has worked with the administering agency to monitor and advance the e-bike incentive program approved in 2021 throughout to move towards program launch estimated for fall 2024, keeping Californians updated on progress of the program and steps to participate once launched for consumers and vendors. CalBike also communicates with local, regional, and state-level staff and elected officials about e-bike education and regulations, learning what local challenges are and helping to determine the gaps in regulation and education and create strategies to address them. Legislative Improvements -In the past year, CalBike has advocated for a number of legislative improvements to increase safe and fun bicycling and active mobility. CalBike helped achieve a new law creating penalties for cars blocking bike lanes, as well as a pilot program to test speed enforcement cameras in six jurisdictions to create safer streets. CalBike worked unsuccessfully to change the vehicle code to allow bicyclists to treat stop signs as yield when no cares are present, worked to make roads safer for people on bikes by requiring trucks to have side underride guards and all cars to have speed governors, and worked on a number of efforts to improve funding for active transportation. Complete Streets -CalBike has continued years-long campaign to make Caltrans roads safe for people walking and bicycling by requiring the agency to incorporate complete streets facilities in maintenance projects on its roads.
