The Community Oriented Policing section (COPS) programs, support the Alex. Police Dept. (APD) officers working with at risk youth and families in the city to foster an atmosphere of communication and cooperation to improve the overall quality of life for both the youth and their families. The officers engage directly with disadvantaged youth thru meaningful community projects, fun recreational activities and rewards to acknowledge academic effort and achievement. This regular positive interaction between the officers and Alexandria's youth is critical to building trust, promotion of meaningful relationships and ensuring positive outcomes. This benefits not only the children served by the program, but to the entire Alexandria community as well. This includes Community Police Academy $2461, Xmas Shop with an officer $5075, Thanksgiving food distribution $1278, Youth sports $2557. 0 11371 Department Initiatives. The APF continues programs to improve officer morale and performance thru programs including Police Week activities $6332, holiday reception $2657, appreciation days events $3751, APD substation $2500, sports activities $300, HEROES Inc Tournament $700 and tuition assistance $8945. 0 25185 The APF continues their program of ensuring the ongoing care of the K9 dogs in their retirement.
