We undertook this because in TN south central region, Lawrence County has the highest numbers for children in foster care / DCS custody. We partnered with our juvenile magistrate, local law enforcement agencies, churches, civic organizations, local businesses, and many citizen volunteers to help wrap around services and needs for the students, families, and even the DCS staff. My name is Robert Dunnavant, and I serve as Director of LCSAP Coalition. While we have come a long way in a short period of time, I came into this position while the organization was in much turmoil and confusion due to the faulty leadership of the previous director, who left on bad terms. Upon assuming this role, I had to work to do a lot of catching up on many important documentation and filings due to her lack of discipline and organization, one such being the 990 filings. I, along with my board of directors, were left with no documentation letting us know when the official filing dates were for the organization. Therefore, we based our filing off of a normal year and filed in April 2024 during tax season for 2023, assuming 2022 had been filed and that we were doing the correct thing, though clearly now we understand this to not be the case. Upon receiving a penalty letter, I immediately reached out to the IRS and received great guidance on next steps to take corrective action, first being this letter. We are also now working with a local certified public accountant to ensure this issue does not reoccur in the future.
