FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A STATEMENT OF PROGRAM ACCOMPLISHMENTS Farming programs: The Kirinjiko market stall building is complete with electricity from the Tanzania Electrical Supply Company, TANESCO. The development of Empower Tanzanias 1-acre fenced in farm plot began with seedling beds for two pilot projects a hydroponics project growing tomato plants, and an intensive vegetable growing project using vertical grow bags. With successful pilots, we will be able to share our results with farmers in Tanzania to show that they can grow enough nutritious food to feed their families, preventing hunger and malnutrition and prompting investment in education and in their communities. We are also learning how to grow papaya trees! And, there are now two renters in our market stalls.The Integrated Farming project (IFP) farmers at Lambo village in Mwanga District participated in a workshop conducted by our consultant, East-West Knowledge Transfer. The emphasis was on growing vegetables using good seed, transferred seedlings, and intensely spaced vegetable beds. This project started with 23 grain amaranth farmers, 22 dairy goats and 10 goat farmers, and 22 sheep and 10 sheep farmers. Expanding knowledge and offspring to other villagers, we now have 33 grain amaranth farmers and over 50 animals, despite a few animal deaths.Water Projects: We provided support to our four main water projects by meeting with the communities and water committees at each location three times in 2023, accompanied by the District Water Engineer. The locations/villages of the water projects are: Pangaro, Njiro, Nadururu, and Ruvu Darajani.Education Programs: The Same Learning Center (SLC) continues to make an impact on the most vulnerable children in and around Same town. Students of the SLC attended twice-weekly after school meetings and Saturday morning sessions where they received tutoring in English by our staff of English teachers, along with nutritious meals, snacks, other support services. Empower Tanzania provides each student in the program with a school uniform, shoes, and stationery. We also provide other necessities monthly like soap, shoe-polish, toothpaste, oil gel, and menstrual pads. Along with academic tutoring, other life skills like gardening, sports and games, cooking, computers, phone skills, personal hygiene, self-defense techniques, balanced diet, and mathematics are taught. In addition, we help students struggling with health issues by giving them the care and assistance they need to succeed academically.The Msindo Kids Club conducted life skills sessions for 50 vulnerable kids every Saturday. Community leader/mentors led the programming.The Vudee Kids Club completed the first 12 months of the 24-month program. Life skills, nutrition and gardening are the topics for this 50-member club, which meets every Saturday.Improving Womens Health Program (IWHP). The goal of IWHP is improving the health and health equity of the 269,807 people living in the Same District of the Kilimanjaro Region of Tanzania. Thirty-four women, one from each ward of the District were trained to provide public health education, using curricula developed by US and Tanzanian clinicians focused on major health issues that could be facilitated by the general public. These 34 Community Health Workers (CHWs) scheduled programs for the public in their respective wards. Using battery-powered projectors and speakers, the CHWs presented programs on such topics as hand washing, making safe water, cholera, personal hygiene, HIV/AIDS prevention gender-based violence, money management and family planning. With the relaxation of Covid caused reduction of personal meetings, the IWHP resumed its schedule, attracting over 2,000 participants monthly. Challenges: The Covid 19 epidemic reduced personal education meetings and the annual retraining of CHWs was cancelled. This program is geared toward behavior change based on specific training and education. Such behavior change happens slowly. We continue to monitor health data for the district.Community Hospital-Alliance Program (CHAP). With the support of the Maasai chiefs and their elders, we trained 34 women as Community Health Workers, representing 21 different villages. They were taught how to obtain vital signs, treat minor injuries and burns and providing public health education. The CHWs provided services to members of their villages and their reputation increased as the Maasai came to rely on these women. They trained Masai men in the construction and use of pit latrines. As a result, in 2019, for the first time, there were no cases of cholera in the area. Based upon these improvements I the community, the status of women has improved. Observations by Chief Kiboko (and confirmed by program staff) support this change in status. We will continue to observe these communities to determine if this behavior change by Maasai men continues and is determined to be permanent. Completion of construction of two grain mills (Maore and Ruvu villages) was a huge program accomplishment, with Maasai men providing much of the labor in construction of the building that houses the milling machine. Over time, we will observe this activity to determine if this milling service generates enough revenue to cover the ongoing costs of the stipends and supplies for the 34 CHWs/RHRP (Reproductive Health Relations Program) has a goal of reducing the rate of early pregnancy in 19 secondary schools in Same District of the Kilimanjaro Region. School administrators identified public and Roman Catholic secondary schools in the following Wards: Kisisma, Stesheni, Same, Kisiwani, Mwembe, Makanya, Hedaru and Njoro, serving over 65,000 students. Teachers were trained to deliver the content which focused on sexuality, physical development and childrens rights. Relationships improved between teachers and students. Teen pregnancies were reduced in the participating schools. Teachers from every primary and secondary school in Same District participated in the RHRP training in 2023.Gender-Based Violence and Vumwe DesignsThe Gender-Based Violence Program created 10 support groups, each serving up to 10 victims of domestic violence. Group and individual counseling sessions enhanced the discussions and plans of each support group. After three years, testing confirmed the observations of the staff that attitudes and self esteem had significantly improved. The women met as a group and decided to pursue a revenue generating process. A team of champions went to Uganda to receive training in income generating activities. These champions returned and taught others in their support groups. They decided to develop a business of fabric production in batik and tie dye. Equipment and supplies were provided, and plans made to market these products in Tanzania and then in the United States. The program was called Vumwe Designs (We are Together) and a contractor hired to manage the program. Barriers to import of the Vumwe Designs products have been overcome and sales in the US are occurring.
