In addition to disseminating the curriculum at local elementary and Middle schools, KLA designed a Peer Education component, which has 12-18 year old youths reaching out to their peers to ascertain their attitudes and opinions on vaping. The KLA Peer Educators then provide examples of the harm caused by vaping, which, in a growing number of incidents, includes death. KLA Peer Educators are active at Dole Middle School and at Farrington High School. This program is ongoing. Girl's Group began in Fall of 2023, and engages 9-17 year old girls in edifying activities designed to assist the girls with social emotional skills, self-awareness, coping skills, healthy relationships, substance use mitigation and harm reduction. It is estimated that 80% of the girls in Girl's Group engage in vaping. This program is ongoing. The continued objectives of our work to serve individuals in accessing justice, especially those harmed by injustice and wrongdoing, and to assist those who caused harm with the opportunity to learn from and recover from harmful behavior. HFRJ works with individuals, community based organizations, schools, courts, prisons and to assist individuals harmed by injustice to increase emotional and physical healing. HFRJ's goals include improving the justice system and specifically working for the individual healing of people harmed by crime and social injustice. HFRJ works to help schools use alternatives to punishment and retribution to achieve discipline. We collaborate with the community and individuals to promote research-identifying variables that ultimately reduce repeat crime, substance disorder, and increase healing. We've described our work in over 50 academic papers and two books in mostly peer reviewed publications. We work to increase evidence-based knowledge of what helps people heal and rehabilitate and strengthen communities. We disseminate the information through our published papers. Our income is mainly by grants, individual donations and small contracts. Current projects include: 1. Provided international conference on Justice Innovations February 16-19 at the University of Hawai'i that over 300 people attended from all continents that took 12 months of volunteer preparation; 2. Consistently provide and connect with public schools on O'ahu and the Hawai'i State Department of Education to promote "restorative whole schools;" 2. Design, provide, and scale up the reentry planning process we designed, provided and have published 20 peer reviewed papers on; 3. Provide and scale up for Windward Community College a higher & continuing education program for imprisoned women that trains and pays peer tutors and gives financial incentives to women who pass the GED, tutor facilitators who observe and support the tutors in any way possible at the prison, pay for college correspondence courses for select imprisoned women, provide educational materials for the prison including laptops, reentry planning and restorative justice processing, and other resources; 4. Provide a free reentry legal resource that covers the legal needs for people returning to the community after incarceration that is over 300 pages long-distribution of the guidebook is at: hawaiifriends.org-one copy of the guidebook was provided for each state prison and the private prison in Arizona that our state contacts with the state's corrections department; 5. Provide reentry planning circles as possible to people in prison and out of incarceration; 6. On February 15, 2024 we provided the 15th annual parole completion celebration in our Supreme Court, which the Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald opened, that was attended by about 70 people; 7. In the last 12 months we provided three in person presentations (one in Como, Italy and two in Honolulu), one asynchronous zoom presentation for the Victimology Society of Serbia; 8. Finalizing two papers for an international restorative justice encyclopedia. Form 990, Part III, Line 2 The Justice Innovation Summit will be held in February of 2024. During this year, donations, grants and tuition were collected. The purpose of this international Summit is to bring different justice innovations together to create lasting changes in providing justice for individuals and communities.
