Notably, HMN had focused its efforts on science-based monitoring and studying of hummingbird populations to obtain important information supporting the conservation of these magnificent creatures. However, to better realize our mission of "Maintaining hummingbird diversity and abundance throughout the Americas," we needed to integrate community-based conservation ideas into HMN's science-based beginning. We endeavor to offer services, resources, and opportunities to help communities across the hemisphere participate in and benefit from hummingbird conservation activities. Our vision is " Helping hummingbirds survive, reproduce, and thrive while human communities benefit economically, socially, and ecologically from their hummingbird conservation activities." RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION: Fieldwork by Dr. Sergio Diaz-Infante and Dra. Elsa Figueroa continued the research by studying hummingbird/plant interactions and investigating conservation needs for a threatened hummingbird species in Nayarit. We began work at a high-elevation study site to understand how hummingbirds and their nectar plants vary across an elevational gradient. We continued working with the El Cuarenteño community with STEAM activities for primary - high school students and collecting seeds for future restoration efforts. 17106 15038 MONITORING: Trend monitoring continues at sites in BC, UT, CO, NM, AZ, MT, and ID. Gaby Samaniego coordinated this program for 8 months. We offered a training workshop for students and professionals to learn hummingbird banding and monitoring techniques. Additionally, a community monitor in El Cuarenteno continued to work with Dra-Figueroa's field teams and to begin the community monitoring program. 1900 13002 We continued to develop our online outreach activities and offered a scholarship to Gabriela Samaniego for her studies at the University of Arizona's School of Natural Resources and the Environment.
