Summer Program. During their time in D.C., participants lived with host families, underwent intensive leadership training, and completed work placements on Capitol Hill. Throughout the summer, they shared their personal stories at various venues, including a House Congressional Forum hosted by Representative Jamie Raskin, which had an audience of 50 attendees, and a Senate Congressional Forum hosted by Senator Chris Van Hollen, also attended by 50 guests. They spoke at St. Johns Norwood Episcopal Church to a group of 50 people and at Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church and Bethesda Jewish Congregation, which drew a similar number of participants. The program culminated with an event at Busboys & Poets called The Dove, co-sponsored by Americans for Peace Now and open to the public, where they engaged with an audience of 75 attendees.Following the summer program, NSL established an alumni working group to maintain ongoing engagement and provide updates from the region to our D.C. network. Just as the group began its work, the tragic events of October 7, 2023, unfolded following the outbreak of the war in Gaza. In response, NSL rallied to support our alumni. Several brave alums decided they needed to work together rather than retreat to their corner to advocate for a ceasefire, the release of the Israeli hostages, and to work towards ending this conflict for good. Over the following months, NSL facilitated these initiatives and coordinated meetings with congressional offices, allowing alumni to share their on-the-ground reports directly. The group eventually decided that they needed to take matters into their own hands and draft a vision for the future - their own version of a Marshall Plan.
