A new project for the foundation: establishing tilapia aquaculture on Pemba Island. Tilapia is a native East African freshwater fish widely farmed globally, with environmental benefits as its diet is vegetarian. Unlike the Tanzania mainland, Pemba Island has no tradition of tilapia farming or consumption. There can be multiple benefits from establishing tilapia farming on the island: improved nutrition from a relatively cheap source; reduction in fishing pressures on marine fisheries, especially the extensive coral reefs which are currently overfished. This project will create Pemba's first commercial scale tilapia farm, with ponds, buildings and a borehole. Construction started this year and will continue in 2024. 26200 X 28538 Continuation of project to build and maintain a nursery school in the village of Maziwa Ngombe. In 2022 we began the addition of a permanent kitchen building to provide breakfast for all students. This was substantially completed in 2023. We also started extensive renovations on the school buildings, including new doors and locks, bars and shutters on classroom windows, floor repairs, new roofing, and painting throughout. This program will continue in 2024. About 400 studenst attend this school. 25900 X 28211 Continuation of program to design and install drip irrigation systems on small family or co-op farms. Irrigation has been a key activity since the foundation's formation. 3 new systems installed, repairs made to several existing systems, and the first solar powered water pump was provided to a farm to replace the gasoline-powered pump. We hope to be able to convert entirely to solar pumps in future. About 200-300 extended family and co-op members were benefited directly.
