We had an early vision of bridging the gap between college student-athletes and younger members of underserved youth in our own neighborhoods to inspire growth and belief in ones own self. Boys and Girls Club of Carmel Valley and Star/Pal Youth Basketball Camp: Star/Pal is a nonprofit devoted to removing obstacles between youth in under resourced communities and the roadblocks that stop them from achieving their goals and dreams. Recognizing this reality, 85 underserved youth attended this basketball clinic free of charge. In addition to basketball instruction, T-shirts, autographed items, meet and greets and interactive games were offered and enjoyed by all that attended. We later learned that a Star/Pal student, attended his teachers funeral and placed his MESA camp t-shirt on her coffin, thanking her for introducing him to basketball and the MESA student-athlete camp. Financial Literacy Class with BofA: MESA Foundation proudly partners with industry leading experts on financial planning to educate our student-athletes about financial literacy in a way that is relatable to todays young adult. We focus on tax planning and investing for future expenses. Block Fentanyl Campaign: Over 70,000 lives were lost in 2023 due to opioid crises facing the nation. August 21st is National Fentanyl Awareness Day. MESA Foundation partnered in a campaign with the SD Attorney Generals office to film and distribute a PSA regarding #BlockFentanyl and #KnowAboutNarcan. The video was shared over Instrgram, X (formally Twitter), Snapchat, LinkedIn and UTube by MESA student-athletes, the US Dept. of Justice and other coalition members. We had coaches from other schools in the nation calling us inquiring about how they can go about filming the same message for their communities. Intertribal Youth Basketball Clinic at Pechanga Sports Arena: Over 200 kids attended this basketball skills clinic that was offered at no cost. T-shirts, autographed items, meet and greets and interactive games were offered and enjoyed by all that attended. Tribal youth groups from all over Southern California traveled to attend this camp. Semperfit Youth Basketball Clinic at Camp Pendleton: Over 150 kids attended this basketball skills clinic that was offered at no cost to youth of active military families. T-shirts, autographed items, meet and greets and interactive games were offered and enjoyed by all that attended. Blood Drive for Sickle Cell Awareness: MESA partnered with San Diego Blood Bank to host an education class and blood drive on Sickle Cell disease. MESA student-athletes spent weeks prepping for this event by posting on their social media platforms Instagram and X (formally Twitter) to make meaningful impacts. The blood drive resulted in 73 total donors, 47 first time donors, 64 pints of blood with the potential to save 192 lives. A Walk for ALS: MESA partnered with ALS to help raise awareness to the goal of raising $350k to help find treatments for the disease. MESA student-athletes spent weeks prepping for this event by posting on their social media platforms Instagram and X (formally Twitter) to make meaningful impacts. Collective fundraising efforts raised over $508,000 dollars. Crushing ALSs initial fundraising goals. Fighting Food Insecurity: 1 in 4 people in San Diego are experiencing food insecurity. MESA Foundation partnered with the San Diego Foodbank to amplify the need to bring additional awareness. In November and December MESA student-athletes spent their time at food distribution sites and leveraged their platforms to make meaningful impacts for over 500 local lives. Elderly and children included.In addition to our community impact, we worked tirelessly on developing a foundation for MESA that can grow sustainably with the hopes of community buy-in and support. We redesigned and launched a new website complete with tiered memberships with different deliverables. We filled those deliverables as promised including custom rings and jackets (this is ongoing). Hired and paid a photographer for content (a SDSU student familiar with the program.) We had multiple interviews with the press regarding our efforts and growth. . We interviewed and brought on independent consultants to bring larger national brands to MESA. We met and pitched our fundraising mission with small local businesses and supporters of SDSU basketball. We co-created a campaign with Blenders eyewear, Woodstock's pizza and NOVO brewery to create SDSU inspired products with a portion of the sales coming back to MESA Q1 and Q2 2024. We became an official partner of SDSU. We were successful in negotiating a partnership with JMI to run our ads in the arena and use the SDSU mark on our marketing efforts.
