At our volunteer-run grocery collective, the Food Collective acts as a local hub for leadership development and food-related education for members and patrons alike. false false 432252 372855 We ran a nonprofit, volunteer-operated educational grocery hub that served tens of thousands of patrons with affordable, sustainably-sourced, ethically-traded staple foods and groceries in the San Francisco Bay Areas poorest community. Served over 5,000 patrons. We worked to bring in vendors and farmers who otherwise lack access to the normative food system, with specific focuses on local vendors, new vendors, worker-owned small businesses, immigrant vendors, and vendors from historically marginalized communities. Our elected volunteer Board provides deep project coordination and mentorship to students who're interested in participating and designing community projects with the Food Collective at the center. Each volunteer committee, any one of which our 125 regular members are required to serve on, meets twice a month and designs educational curricula, manages our communications, plans member and community events, and selects which foods should be offered at the Collective, among many other items. We hosted six sets of student volunteer-designed and facilitated workshops on food justice issues, including on how to have one-on-one conversations about food systems issues and how to map food system issues.
