However, income from certain activities not directly related to the Association's tax-exempt purpose is subject to taxation as unrelated business income. The Association's primary activities subject to taxation include newsletter and resource guide advertising revenues. Income tax related to unrelated business income was $3,445 for the year ended August 31, 2023. It is the Association's policy to evaluate all tax positions to identify those that may be considered uncertain. All identified material tax positions are assessed and measured by a "more-likely-than-not" threshold to determine if the benefit of any uncertain tax position should be recognized in the financial statements. Any changes in the amount of a tax position are recognized in the period the change occurs. The Association files its Form 990 series tax returns in the U.S. Federal jurisdiction and with the North Carolina Department of Revenue. The Association's returns are subject to examination by the Internal Revenue Service for a period of three years after the respective filing deadlines. In addition, the Association's state tax returns for the same years are subject to examination by state authorities for similar time periods.
