<Desc>SFP coordinates safe, meaningful, affordable, and fun international service opportunities for volunteer groups. SFP utilizes a unique approach towards cross-cultural community development in which we equally prioritize the rich and genuine experience of volunteers with the sustainable and collaborative development of our long-term partner communities in which we work. Our program 'LLUVIA', provides participants with the opportunity of LIVING like the community where they are working while LEARNING from each other, UNITING efforts by working together on the project they are developing through VOLUNTEERING, INNOVATING solutions and ACTING on the social injustices that both the community and participants experience every day.SEE "SCHEDULE O" for details of our 2022-2023 accomplishments.LIVING, LEARNING, UNITING, VOLUNTEERING, INNOVATING, and ACTING (LLUVIA) accomplishments in 2022-2023:LLUVIA Program with Appalachian State University December 18th to 23rd, 2022From December 18th to 23rd, 2022 Service For Peace (SFP) hosted a group of volunteers from Appalachian State University (ASU), marking a significant event for the fiscal year 2022-2023, with an income of US$9,350. The ASU volunteers, characterized by their enthusiasm and readiness to contribute, embarked on a journey of community engagement and development. Their activities began with a community tour and training in water collection system installation. The team's efficiency was remarkable, completing tasks ahead of schedule and participating in recreational and integration activities. A key achievement of this project was the significant impact on the local community, notably exceeding the initial goal of assisting 5 families by ultimately benefiting 8 families. This was achieved through dedicated efforts, including the distribution of water filters and Christmas baskets, and the installation of water storage systems, providing around 1,200 gallons of water storage capacity in total. The project concluded with cultural immersion, as the volunteers explored the local area and relaxed at the beach. This successful collaboration not only demonstrated the effectiveness of the volunteers' work but also highlighted the vital role of LLUVIA programs in supporting SPP's initiatives, such as Water Harvesting Program and the "Community Council for Development and Peace," thereby empowering and uplifting the community.LLUVIA Program with North Carolina State University March 2022In March 2022, Service For Peace (SPP) collaborated with North Carolina State University (NCSU) volunteers, significantly impacting the local community by exceeding their goal and assisting 17 families, rather than the planned 9, with an expenditure of US$21,450. This project, part of the fiscal year 2022-2023 initiatives, involved engaging activities like community tours, skill-building sessions on water collection system installation, and efficient task completion by the volunteers. Notably, the project's success is also measured in the tangible benefit to the community: the installation of water storage systems, which collectively added approximately 2,550 gallons of water storage capacity in the form of various water tanks. This enhancement significantly improves the community's water management and sustainability. The volunteers' journey concluded with cultural immersion and relaxation, highlighting the project's holistic approach to community development and volunteer engagement.New Institutional Alliance with Rotary International March 2022During the LLUVIA program with North Carolina State University (NCSU), a pivotal connection was forged, leading to a promising proposal for an alliance between various Rotary International clubs and Service For Peace (SPP), with an associated cost of US$185. This opportunity arose when Ken, a participant in the LLUVIA program, connected with Michael Giancola, the NCSU group's faculty leader. Both being members of Rotary International in their respective cities, they leveraged this common ground to organize a meeting with the Santo Domingo Rotary Club. The proposed alliance, initiated by Ken and supported by Michael, aimed to bolster SPP's Water Harvesting Empowerment programs in Santo Domingo. The meeting was fruitful, offering SPP a platform to present its program to the Santo Domingo Rotary Club members. It led to a proposed collaboration between Rotary International and SPP for an international project in communities affiliated with SPP. Furthermore, the suggestion for Joan Mateo to join the Santo Domingo Rotary Club was made to solidify the burgeoning alliance between Rotary International and SFP/SPP. This development during the LLUVIA program has opened avenues for potential collaborations, promising to empower communities through Water Harvesting Empowerment programs and other international projects, marking a significant stride in community development and international cooperation.Participation Report: The Actively Building Community Solidarity (ABCS) Conference, June 2023During the 2022-2023 fiscal year, our participation in the Actively Building Community Solidarity (ABCS) Conference at Emory University, organized by Break Away, was a pivotal event, incurring an expenditure of US$870.53. As the sole community partner present, we effectively presented our programs and methodologies, engaging in enriching discussions on topics such as equality, identity, and ethical storytelling. This platform not only accentuated our inclusive impact but also facilitated valuable connections with universities like Hamline, William & Mary, and Emory. These interactions have paved the way for future collaborations, notably with GT Medical Brigades for student experiences in the 2023-2024 winter break. Our active involvement in the ABCS conference has been crucial in securing the participation of four groups for the next fiscal year, with two more under consideration, demonstrating our dedication to expanding our reach and forging sustainable partnerships, all within a well-managed budget framework.El Batey Water Harvesting Program Funded by Wine To Water (Organization) September 2023In September 2023, the "Water Harvesting Program" in El Batey community of Piedra Blanca, Monseor Nouel province, Dominican Republic, marked a significant milestone, thanks to the generous donation from Wine to Water Dominican Republic. With an expenditure of US$2,090.91, this initiative, led by Service for Peace in collaboration with Wine to Water Dominican Republic, successfully installed rainwater collection systems in the homes of 10 families. This effort provided a total water storage capacity of approximately 1,500 gallons, significantly enhancing access to clean water and improving the quality of life in the community. The project's inauguration, led by community leader Randy Reyes and supported by various organizations, was not just about installing water systems but also about imparting crucial environmental education and empowerment. The beneficiaries received training on water conservation and the use of water filters, ensuring the sustainability and responsible management of this vital resource. This transformative initiative, in line with national sustainable development goals, is poised for further expansion, promising continued positive impact and community empowerment in the Dominican Republic.Water Harvesting Program El Batey, Visit from Rotary District 4060 September 2023El Batey community welcomed distinguished visitors, including Juan Carlos Perez Fernandez, President of Rotary Quisqueya, and Ruben Goico, Governor of Rotary International District 4060, representing Rotary Santo Domingo Bella Vista Dominican Republic. Hosted by the "La Nueva Esperanza" Community Council for Development and Peace, and Joan Mateo of Service for Peace Dominican Republic, this visit highlighted the collaborative efforts in the community, and the "Water Harvesting" system installation sponsored by Wine to Water. The Rotary leaders actively participated and exchanged ideas for future projects, reinforcing their commitment to sustainable community development. This significant visit underscored the power of partnership and community spirit in driving positive change and building a brighter future for El Batey.</Desc>
