We also delivered meals to persons unable to drive. I misunderstood that the non-profit had a filing requirement and did not thoroughly read the letter received in 2021. I also thought our organization had been categorized as a public charity but I now know we are categorized as a private foundation instead. After more research on the IRS website for private foundations I believe we are incorrectly classified. We are not a Private Foundation by any means. We meet the criteria described as a Public Charity. Im working diligently to bring this organization back into compliance but I need our status corrected. We filed form 8940 but processing is delayed. We still need to file Form 990 to keep our exemption status. Due to my lack of knowledge and education about non-profit filing requirements I request a waiver of any penalties and interest based on reasonable cause or first-time abate.
