October 1, 2024 2024-10-01 Grant funds were used to conduct surveys to determine whether Greenwood Ecological Reserve (GWER) supports a breeding population of the gopher frog (Rana capita), a species of conservation concern and candidate for listing as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Automated wildlife recording systems (ARDs) were placed at two wetlands at GWER from March 2024 to June 2024. All amphibian species calling on ARD recordings were identified to species. Wetlands were also sampled for larval frogs using dip-nets. In addition, they searched for gopher frogs in tortoise burrows near the site where they were heard calling in 2023 using a camera scope in June and July 2024. No gopher frogs were detected on recordings, by dip-netting, or in tortoise burrows. The grantor has no reason to doubt the accuracy or reliability of the reports from the grantee; therefore, it has not conducted any independent verification of the reports. October 1, 2024 2024-10-01 Grant funds were used to conduct field surveys at Greenwood Ecological Reserve (GWER) in June and July 2024. 12 gopher tortoises were captured and permanently marked. Two of the 12 tortoises had ticks; the number of ticks per tortoise ranged from 2-5. Results of the 2023 health screenings of 10 tortoises by Tall Timbers Research Station revealed that 4 tested positive for exposure to Mycoplasma agassizii. Two of these tortoises had a co-infection of Helicobacter sp., and an additional two tortoises tested positive for Helicobacter sp. alone. None of the tortoises that received health screenings exhibited symptoms of disease. Collectively, these activities furthered the purpose of collecting demographic data on an old growth pine forest at GWER for comparison with the second growth pine habitat at Ichauway.
