      <PrimaryExemptPurposeTxt>The mission of the Pacific Northwest Canola Association to grow the canola industry in the Pacific Northwest (ID, MT, OR, and WA) through education, advocacy, and marketing.</PrimaryExemptPurposeTxt>
      <ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp>
        <DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>We started off 2023 with our first-ever canola workshop in Idaho, and it was one for the record books with a standing room only, sold out crowd of 215 attendees, more than half of whom were growers. Industry sponsors contributed $4,700 to the event, there were 30 speakers in general and breakout sessions, and a post-workshop survey had an overwhelming response to hold another workshop in 2024.so we are! Despite weather and pest challenges, year-end acreage reports from USDA-FSA show an increase of nearly 14% in the four-state region, with Idaho stealing the show at a whopping 41% increase! Speaking of increased acres, check out this front-page feature story, The Rise of Canola: Northwest canola acreage continues to surge by Capital Press reporter Matthew Weaver. Other highlights and activities during 2023 included: Two large-scale spring canola variety trials (Walla Walla and Moscow-Pullman) many thanks to the Reas and Kopfs for their time and effort with all that went in to hosting those!Ten field tours, Shop Talks, and Stop n Talks; presentations at four industry meetings, and at MSU, OSU, UI, and WSU field days; planning and presenting a session about canola at the WSU Wheat Academy38 new producer members, nine new industry members, and five industry members increased their membership to the next level. Visits to ID, MT, OR and WA legislative offices in D.C. to lobby for and address canola-specific issues. You were well represented with board members Dale Flikkema, Ray Mosman, Anna Scharf, Daniel Stenbakken, and me all in attendance, along with several other industry member representatives. Testifying and submitting comments in opposition to legislation to ban and/or permanently restrict canola production in the Willamette ValleyParticipating on ID and WA Oilseed Commissions quarterly calls and providing input on research proposals.Starting the process of establishing an oilseed checkoff in MT to generate much needed funds for research and marketing. Our goal is to have a successful ballot measure in 2024. Helping plan the 2023 U.S. Canola Research Conference in St. Louis; several PNW researchers gave presentations and we had a poster about the on-farm variety trials.Working with USDA-RMA on PNW-specific canola insurance issues, i.e. planting date changes, establishing winter canola insurance in Montana, and in the Flathead Valley.Letters on behalf of the PNWCA to the EPA to 1) oppose their onerous ESA Herbicide Strategy and 2) comment on their underestimated numbers in the Proposed Rule for RFS volumes for 2023-2025.Letter in support of a USDA-NIFA grant for winter canola cultivar development adaptable to the winter canola production regions of Montana.Partnering with the Northern Pulse Growers and MT Grain Growers Associations for the MGGA Convention in Great Falls for the second year; President Dale Flikkema spoke on behalf of both the PNWCA and the USCA.</DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>
