Part I Line 1 | Explanation:| This year we continued to build on existing community partnerships such as those with the Oregon Chinese Coalition and also worked with other important community leaders for programs such as the Blueprint Foundation Adelante mujeres and ELSO Experience Life Science Outdoors formerly Camp ELSO. All of these organizations do specific and intentional work with and for their communities and it was great to be able to connect with them. In July 2023 Tualatin River NWR hosted a Pride in the Wild event one of the first Pride events in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services Pacific Region. The event was organized by the USFWS Pride Employee Resource Group with community partners such as the Feminist Bird Club and Queer Flockers. The event was open to all with a specific focus on celebrating the LGBTQ+ community and featured a full lineup of activities including a bird walk plant walk water coloring and salsa and bachata dancing. Huge thanks goes to the Friends of Tualatin River NWRC for purchasing our first Pride flag and to the Community Asset Committee for providing snacks and refreshments. Part I Line 1 | Explanation:| Picture Yourself in Nature was the theme of the 2nd Annual Friends Youth Art Contest in partnership with the Oregon Chinese Coalition. Fifty-five submissions from Kindergarten- 12th grade students were judged in 2023. I was honored to hand out the certificates ribbons and prizes provided by the Friends during a reception at the Refuge in February. Eighteen of the top scored pieces are currently on display in the Visitor Center. Part I Line 1 | Explanation:| The first annual Brews for the Birds Beer & Music Festival Benefit B4B took place the first weekend in August. The benefit netted just a little over $9,000 from the two-day event. Part I Line 1 | Explanation:| It has been yet another productive year for the TRNWRC restoration program. Through the Friends and USFWS we successfully engaged volunteers in over 1000 hours of service for the benefit of wildlife and their habitat. Citizen science projects like the Christmas Bird Count and amphibian egg mass surveys experienced excellent engagement with 54 volunteers joining us in this important work. One major accomplishment this year was the installation of the pollinator gardens. This project initiated by alumna Friends of the Refuge HRS Carly provides both habitat and forage for native pollinators and accessible education for visitors. Part I Line 1 | Explanation:| Developing a retail outlet Natures Overlook in the Visitor Center that not only brings in significant earned income which is invested toward the Friends mission in support of the Refuge but also offers for sale items that further the message of the refuge and the Friends. Nature's Overlook is operated entirely by Friends Members and all profits from this store benefit Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge Providing funds to hire key public use staff for the Refuge as well as contributing funds to conduct numerous restoration maintenance and education projects on the Refuge. Part I Line 1 | Explanation:| Successfully advocating for and supporting land conservation planning resulting in an approved Refuge boundary of 7,370 acres of the Refuges two units Sherwood and Wapato Lake. Successfully advocating for federal funding for land acquisition within the Refuge acquisition boundary. Successfully advocating for federal funding for construction of a Visitor Center and other public use facilities now totaling a $10 million investment. Successfully advocating on behalf of the Refuge and the habitat of Washington County by participating as the plaintiff in the Grabhorn Landfill lawsuit and as a supporter of the Poole Quarry lawsuit.
